Despite the heavy rain and cold, there was a strong hog attendance in this well organized event. There was a lull in the rain just before the start, but it returned to see us off—a bit of a contrast to summer events such as Askern and Eyam!!

The first section was a long straight slog of about 3 miles with an uphill kick at the end then taking a left into a minor road. Past the old waterworks building now a private house (as seen on channel 4 ‘Grand Designs) –always wondered where that was! The running became more pleasant passing through small villages on winding quiet roads, the rain eased and eventually stopped. After leaving the outskirts of Elmton, the route descended into the more built-up Cresswell, then climbed out over to Whitwell (legs now starting to get heavvvy!). After Whitwell the main road was followed past Van Dyks garden centre. This section was quite horrible as the heavy traffic was racing past and kicking spray out, entirely different to the earlier, more idyllic scenery. Once over this part, a left turn down into Clowne was the last chance to pick up a few places before the finish. An excellent event very well marshalled and organized by Clowne Road Runners. All runners received a watercolour print and a miniature tot of spirits!!—just what you need!—full result at: http://www.clowneroadrunners.co.uk/ ......................R.Beresford

As the only Roadhog to compete in a marathon to date this year. Congratulations to Will Bridgman who ran the Nottingham marathon in the impressive time of 3:35.58. Collecting 20 GP points in the process and setting himself a PB should he decide to compete in the Grand Prix next year.

This parkland course affords possibilities for fast times, and so it proved for Graham with a season's best.   Alan pipped him to take second place in the vets behind John Dix, who also scored a season's best. These three are certain to collect the vets honours and deservedly so.

Mark had a day out for his 20 points, and should get 2nd in the Seniors GP.

This event was run on a very warm day, which thankfully was run a 10:00AM, because it got very hot later on.

The organisation was excellent here, with plenty of drinks stations.  Jon reckoned the 900 feet of climbs would be easy, but when you see marshalls on mountain bikes, you know you are in for a ball breaker.

Jon ran an excellent race to finish 33rd and is just about guaranteed the big pot.

Graham ran a good race outpointing Al who stuck on gamely.  Dave's legs gave up on the fastest section of the course, but again gets a max.

Two sour notes, Dave Drabble threw a cup of water in another runners face, and Jon Ogle told everybody to get an XL size sweat top, that would have looked baggy on Joe Brand!

A small turnout for this Bank Holiday fixture.  The course had reverted back to the old one, still pretty easy, nice and flat.  However no drinks station and the website had the start at 11:30 and not 11:00 which is the time that  we set off.

Mark takes up a strong position for 2nd place in the seniors, and John has all but won the vets.  Dave returned to form and has won all his completed races.

OK, before I go through the results and times, lets get the excuses out of the way. It was a very hot day as usual, (everyone should book there holidays to clase with the Askern 10. You are guaranteed a red hot weekend) Personally I was full of Guinness after just returning from a stag weekend in Dublin. Mark had pulled his back playing golf. With Russ and Anne's new arrival Russ has not been getting the long runs in (We might have to check that one with Anne!) Chris is just getting back into some shape after his pneumonia earlier this year. I did not see John Dix after the race, Dave Drabbles speed rating wil tell if he had a good run. Alan gave no excuses that I can remember, maybe he was happy with his 19 GP points?.......................J.Ogle

Where was the opposition?

Seniors: 1 Mark Woodhouse, the rest - nowhere!

Vets: 1 John Dix, the rest - nowhere!

It is getting to the stage where only PBs and Marathon runs will challenge Jon and John in their respective quests for titles. Although not mathematically impossible for a few races yet there needs to a serious competition revival if anyone is going to challenge the current leaders - so come on - get your trainers out.

John is a cosy winner of the vets and on course to regain the title he has won twice before.  Alan is reaching peak form, and that is the best vet effort this year.  Brian continues in solid form.

Big news from this race as "Monkey Boy" sets a new PB.  Mark Woodhouse is desperately trying to close the gap, and he needs figures of around 173 to do just that.  Russ runs another fine race, despite having no mud to run through, and no bike to carry.   Graham and Alan as ever standard bearers for the Vets, but big rivals nonetheless.

Half a dozen mud swillers made the journey to this well organised event in West Yorkshire.  Significantly, Roadhogs legend, Mark Woodhouse returned to action, after vowing never to pull on on another light blue vest again.  Jon beat him by a minute here, but it looks certain he will have to train harder than ever to keep Mark at bay.  Russ, who is looking fitter than Liz Hurley at present put in a near best performance to take 3rd in the seniors.  Russ could be capable of several PB's this year, and could sneak the Shield.

Nice to see Tony back in the Vets.   No Vet has posted a time nearing their best after the first two races, and this competition could be a real slugfest this year.

A big field assembled for this "PB feast" of an event.  This must be the smallest turnout from the hogs that I can remember at this stage in the season.  Jon flew the flag almost beating last years effort, and seems to have got the hang of these endurance races.  I felt in great shape until I pulled my calf at 6 miles, but still managed to overtake a few before the finish.

An excellent finish to this series with the mens team well stacked together to give us a best possible total and win the mens event for 2004.  Unfortunately we didn't quite manage a full Ladies Team this year, due to injuries and "motherly" reasons.  Thanks to all Hogs who participated , even when ravaged by injury and winter bugs, again an excellent team effort all round.  A competition keenly but fairly contested by all age groups from all 4 teams.  Can't wait for next year.

PS Thanks to all marshalls and caterers, photographers and supporters.

What can I say? a fantastic effort from all the Hogs that competed on Sunday!! We actually won the event by 67 points. The crazy thing is that we are only 96 points behind Killamarsh in the overall title with 1 race to go.

In the mens title we have a 123 point lead over Killamarsh, so as long as we can get everyone out at Handsworth we are looking good for atleast 1 title this year. Personally I think we can win the overall title! We won by 67 points on Sunday, why not 96 at our home event? Its time to rally the troops for the final push. Just like the one ring that rules them all, the trophy is trying to  find its way back to its spiritual home in Handsworth WMC.

See you on the 7th, Jon.

18/1/2004 Inter-Club X-Country....Clowne

Cross country results from Clowne. A great effort from the Hogs considering it was the same day as the Northern Vets at Graves Park. In the mens team we are only a few points behind Killamarsh with a real chance of challenging for the mens title. There is a little bit of catching up to do with the ladies team, although a solid performance over the next three events will directly effect the overall result.

Thanks, Jon.
