Schumacher and his Benetton team were in outstanding form, they quickly started to show a lot of pace, Schumacher opening up a lead in the world championship. Hill was prepared to fight all the way, luck wasn't on his side though and through various circumstances he usually found himself behind the German when the chequered flag came down. A disappointed an frustrated Hill had to resort to dangerous tactics in a desperate attempt to gain the lead from Schumacher, the result of this was that the duo clashed on the track, which in the end only favoured the German. In 1996 Schumacher moved to Ferrari, this gave Hill his best opportunity yet to win the elusive world championship. Hill was joined at Williams by the Canadian Indycar champion Jacques Villeneuve. Hill started 1996 with a new relaxed form of driving which showed as he started the season well with good wins while his team mate adjusted to racing in formula 1. By the midpoint in the season a few errors creeped into Hill's driving which the continually improving Villeneuve took advantage of, to cut Hill's lead. Going into the latter phase of the championship Hill found himself driving to defend his advantage while Villeneuve gave his all to win races.
