PARMA v HELSINGBORG

Thursday 22nd October at the Ennio Tardini. Kick-off 21.00 cet.

Parma 1 Helsingborg 0

Well, I watched this game on RaiDue. It was scrambled, but I could still figure out that Parma did not have a great game!! Despite an offensive gameplay, we really never managed to penetrate their resolute defence. It says it all really when our only goal came from a centre-back!! Fabio scored on 44' with a header from a corner. We missed numerous opportunities though and Mario Stanic was the real villain of the piece by missing many chances. I don't understand why Crespo was not brought on - we really needed another goal to take to Sweden. I was immensely disappointed with this performance.

A "crowd" of 3,530 was Parma's lowest ever.

CANNAVARO HEADER GIVES HOLDERS PARMA NARROW UEFA WIN

Parma 1 Helsingborg 0

Scorer: Fabio Cannavaro 44
Halftime: 1-0; Attendance: 3,530

PARMA, Italy, Oct 21 - A Fabio Cannavaro header in the 44th minute gave Italy's Parma a 1-0 win over Sweden's Helsingborg in their UEFA Cup second round, first leg tie on Thursday. Defender Cannavaro met an Ariel Ortega corner at the near post and his perfectly timed glancing header flew past Swedish goalkeeper Sven Andersson. The goal was reward for some patient possession play from holders Parma in the first half but the game was more open after the break, with the well-organised Swedish side having their share of the chances. The lively Arild Stavrum went close for Helsingborg with a low shot a minute after the restart and then Parma goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was forced into a diving save to keep out a powerful drive from Magnus Powell. Parma should have given themselves a two goal cushion for the return leg in the 55th minute when Ortega jinked down the right flank and put a perfect cross over to Mario Stanic. But the Croatian striker somehow contrived to put the ball high and wide from just one metre out with an open goal gaping in front of him. Marco Di Viao also had two good chances to extend Parma's lead in the closing stages of the game but on both occassions he shot straight at Sven Andersson in front of just 3,530 fans at a rainy Ennio Tardini stadium.
