Charlotte Generals History

Year established: 1999

Current Owner: Alex Page

Overall record: 31-21-0

Playoff record: 3-3

Toilet Bowl record: 2-2

First round picks: 1999 - Randy Moss, 2000 - Peyton Manning, 2001 - Marshall Faulk, 2002 - Rich Gannon, 2003 - Michael Vick.

The Montreal People were discovered by Kyle Santee (brother of the infamous "Eagles D in the first round" Ray Santee) and he selected Randy Moss at number 4. It seemed like a safe bet, and though Moss didn't have as productive a year as he did in '98, he helped out since Kyle thought you turned in one lineup for the whole year for half a season. That half a season he went 3-3, and finished 6-7, a game out of the playoffs. He lost to 3-10 Carolina in the first round of the Toilet National Convention, but managed to defeat Singapore in the Title Game to avoid being the third Champ in league history. With the number 1 pick in 2000, Montreal and its people look to bigger and better things.

Klyde the Glyde took Peyton Manning with the number one overall pick in 2000, and made good use of him. Having come within a game of making the playoffs in '99, the People knew they had a shot with one of the best quarterbacks in the game. It was the rest of the team that was a problem, though. The Persons were missing at midseason, and Kyle's squad was mired in last place as late as week 8, but managed to go 4-2 down the stretch to finish at 7-6, good enough for second place in the Eastern Conference. "Bully!" the younger yet wiser Santee shouted as he rushed headlong into playoff action. Their opponent in the first round was the expansion Lightning, who eventually forfeited but had lost anyway. With a swelled head, the Peeps took on the offensive juggernaut that is Tampa, and were squished like tiny bugs due to terrible performances, especially by Manning. Yet having reached the Eastern Conference Finals, Kyle feels ready for 2001, and will try not to do anything dumb.

When Kyle Santee decided he no longer wanted his People to associate with the ACL, Alex Page quickly stormed in and made the French-Canadians into Generals. Stealing Marshall Faulk at number five in the 2001 draft was just the begininng of a magical run. Groomed in the minor leagues (NASCAR Fantasy), Page proved quite adept at making good personnel moves and timely free agent signings. The wannabe doctor's tinkering led the Generals into a tie for first in the East with Philadelphia. They were also second to clinch a playoff berth in the league, all this during his rookie campaign. But as he would find out, Tampa Bay is the "Beast of the East", and was about to make yeast out of the troops. Not even Faulk could save Montreal in the first round. After an early exit, Page up and moved to Charlotte, NC. Rumor has it he stuffed everything in the back of his "General Lee" car and drove it all down himself.

In 2002, the Charlotte Generals had a breakout season. No one expected that Rich Gannon would have the kind of year that he had, but Charlotte picked him. No one expected that Priest Holmes would put up Marshall Faulk-like numbers, but Charlotte picked him as well. And after a 2-2 start, the Generals made a trade with arch-rival Thunder Bay to pick up Travis Henry. The result? A 10-3 record, and solid playoff victories against Baton Rouge and upstart Sao Paulo to win the East. But the clock struck midnight during the East Finals, when Holmes went down with a hip injury and was unable to play in the Super Bowl. The injury turned out to be devastating, as Charlotte lost to Houston. The question is: can Charlotte repeat this in 2003? We'll see...
