IFL League Cup 1st Round
A battling Omagh Town side came to the Oval, looking obviously for a draw, sitting 9 points clear at the top of the First Division, but seemed content to play One Man up front and the rest packed into a tight defence which kept the Glens out for 65 minutes of tonights game. It was a case of the Glens giving debuts to both Sean Armstrong who was transfered from Ballyclare Comrades played a stormer and scored 2 great goals, and later on Michael Halliday was introduced for his first game also after his transfer from local feeded club East Belfast. Armstrong showed a few neat touches early on, dancing around 2 defenders at the corner flag before whipping in a low cross for Elliott who was being watched by Wrexham manager Brian Flynn tonight, but he mis hit his shot and Hamill's rebound was blocked by Gauld and went for a corner. The Omagh Keeper Gallagher made two unbelievable saves from two Stuart Elliott efforts, his first low down from a low volley shot inside the box, palming clear for a corner and the next one was even better for such a big man too, the ball was crossed into the back post and Elliott only needed to hit the target but somehow with the goal open, Gallagher managed to fling himself across the goal and push away for another corner kick.
Tim McCann replaced Paul Leeman at half time and had an immediate impact on the right wing, the Glens switched to 3 at the back in the second 45 and were nearly caught out immediately after the restart with Left winger Donnelly sprinting past Nixon and fired in a high shot which was well stopped by Gough. Omagh then had a corner kick which was played deep to the back post and should have easily have been Alan Gough's ball but made an absolute mess of it and jumped and missed the ball all together, he then made a good save from Crilly's shot but when he made the save he stopped and left the ball lying free in the box, luckily McCombe who unlike Gough was awake managed to clear the danger.
Then enter Debut boy, he showed nice touches, an injection of pace and he scored his first goal after 65 minutes when Elliott fired in a left footed cross which was controlled by Armstrong who then managed to half volley his half hearted shot past Gallagher, 1-0.
His second came 10 minutes later when Elliott caused havoc down the left skipping past 4 challenges and played the ball into Armstrong's feet, and his 20 yard well hit shot flew past Gallagher, 2-0. Rainey came on for Russell and scored the third in the last minute when the 3rd sub Halliday did well to slam his shot at Gallagher after being played through by McCann, but Gallagher palmed the ball down to Rainey who hit home from 2 yards, 3-0.
A Comfortable enough win in the end, well Played Sean Armstrong, who surely should start at Newry on Friday night.
