Saturday 18th December
Glentoran 2 Newry Town 1
Young Double See's Off Town
Glentoran were looking for their first league win in December today and they got it but not easily mind you. In the first ten minutes the Glens looked composed and were passing the ball around nicely which had been missing in previous games before today. It was also the Champions first goals in the League in December also. Newry rarely threatened Alan Gough today but they are well capable of it and the Glens knew only too well what happened last time they both met at the oval, the Border team winning 0-3 in their previous trip and were hoping to repeat the same score line here today.
The Glens missed a few chances inside the first 20 minutes Elliott and Young the Guilty parties with Hamill firing across the box but Elliott missed from 2 yards and Young hit his wild shot handsomely over the crossbar. Scott Young created the move for Brian Russell who turned inside the Newry defence before he was fouled by Robert Casey and Referee Snoddy had no hesitation in pointing the spot. The taker who else but Scott Young who calmly stroked the ball past the un moved Keeper and the relief was evident_ 1-0.
The visitors equalizer came via bad defending by the Champions from the corner, a Casey shot flashed across the penalty area and the unmarked Seamus Kane side footed past Gough giving him no chance.
Near the hour mark the Glens grabbed their second goal. A corner from Scotsman Scott Young appeared to be headed in by Brian Russell but after closer inspection after the game the goal was awarded to the taker Scott Young who's curling corner floated into the far post beating the keeper who was helpless to stop it.
A Big Relief for the all of us at the Oval today, Roll on Boxing Day!!
