CHARACTERISTICS
Beach Volley is a relatively new sport, with a modern conception, which is played in stadiums built in the beaches, or in beaches built in shopping centres and centric sectors in big cities. It is specially required by sponsors due to the atmosphere created by the mixture of beaches, sports, athletic bodies and professionalism, the Beach Volley have been recognised as Olympic sport since Atlanta 1996 games.
For a better understanding of this sport and note the differences with the classic indoor volleyball, lets check some of its basic rules:
Players
Two at each side of the court
Court and net
18 x 9 m. divided in two equal sides. Net High (men): 2.43 m. The court is delimited by a 5 cm. wide line which is part of the playing surface.
Ball
Specially prepared to play Beach Volley. Pressure: 171 to 221 mbar or hPa.
Service:
From any place behind the back line and between the lateral lines. Only one chance is allowed for each service. It is alternated between the players in every service change.
Points:
The matches can be of one or three sets. In a match of one set it is played to 15 points (max. 17). In a match of three sets, they are played to 12 points (max.).The teams only add points when they have the service. In the case of a third set, the points are added independently of the service.
Contact with the ball:
Maximum three contacts in each side. The block counts as a touch. The ball can be played with any part of the body. The attack can not be made managing the ball with the finger tips.
Resting times and changes:
There are four resting times per team in each set. There are not substitutions. The teams change the court side every five points (ex. 4.1/ 6.4). There are not position or rotation rules, only in the service order.
Others:
The players can pass under the net if they do not interfere with their opponents . It is not allowed to block the service view to the receiving team. In case of injury, a maximum of 5 minutes is allowed to get better. the touch on the net is always considered a fault.
