HUSBAND _ Gerald Fanchette Corwin
BIRTH-DEATH:MT Death Certificate "Blgs 5618/ Yellowstone Co, Reg. No 414" MARRIAGE: "Clerk's Certificate as to Marriage Record", Certified to at Greenfield, IA on 28 Jan 1975. Both above, On myfile #1. GAC

1a. This information is based on my personal knowledge. GAC
b. Nat'l Archives File: Elisha D Corwin/SC 710-961, pp 4&5, myfile FRG #2. GAC

2. My Father, G.F.(as he signed his name), or Gerald (as my Mother called him), or Jack (as his old Montana friends called him), Corwin was born near Adrian, Van Buren County, Michigan. Ref 1b twice gives his DOB as 4 Mar 1867, also I recall he was 72 at death. GAC.
! He had about six years of grade school, and after that was self-educated. In Michigan, he worked on farm, in and about logging camps and, I believe blast furnaces. He came by train to Helena MT, (then a three day trip) when he was 23 and went on to stay with relatives in the Saleville (Now Gallatin Gateway) area of MT.

He went, by saddlehorse, I believe, to Billings in 1896, where he ran sheep (which he owned), buying and selling from time to time, until about 1907, when he secured a homestead north of Hardin in the general area of what was later the Olenik property, and which he "swapped" for the property at the forks of Wagonbox Coulee. This was later developed into the "home" property of the ranch where I grew up.

He joined the Masons (Ashlar Lodge #29, AF&AM, Billings), in 1901. Later, he demitted from Ashlar and was one of the charter members of Sts. Johns Lodge #95, Hardin, MT. When he moved to Billings in 1936 he rejoined Ashlar, where he was a member in good standing at the time of his death, I should also note that he was a member of the several York Rite Lodges and of Al Bedoo Lodge of the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, all of Billings.

On Sep 1909, he married my Mother, Neva Diadamia Armstromg of Orient, IA. [A copy of their Marriage License is at myfile FGR #1. GAC] Mother had been born on her parent's old farm, near Orient, IA, attended grade school there, went to Corning (IA) Acadamy, and on to Grinell Collage, graduating in 1907. [myfile, FGR #1. GAC] (She was in the Hardin area, I believe in 1908 or '09, to visit a friend; the friend gave a party attended by my Father, and love took its course!)

I have a notion that things didn't go very well for them for several years, at any rate my father joined in the newly organized Martindale Livestock Company in 1915. What with one thing and another, that enterprise failed to net much and dad felt Martindale in the fall of 1921 somewhat poorer than he gone there in 1915.

So we moved back to the Wagonbox Ranch. Dad ran cattle for a year or so, then we went back into the sheep business. My sister, Kathryn, and I attended Community school until 1927, when we moved into a rented house in Hardin, where we lived until Kathy completed school. About 1928 Dad ran unsuccessfully for the Montana Legislature, whether for house of senate, I know not. During the period, the sheep business was fairly good, but it started downhill in the early '30s…

I entered Montana State Collage in the fall of 1932, and it's my recollection that Kathryn entered the Normal School at Billings that same fall. At any rate, Dad went back to Martinsdale, managing what was now the Bair Sheep Company.

In the summer of 1935, Dad suffered a severe attach of Angina pectoris; that fall he went down to Hardin, talked to the bank, and traded his interest in the ranch for his paper. About the first of the year Bair laid him off, shortly thereafter Kathryn was struck in Billings by a "had-been-drinking" driver, and lived in a coma only about a week before she died, just a few weeks short of her twenty-first Birthday. This just about broke Dad's heart; and it didn't do Mother much good either.

Shortly thereafter, they rented the Broadway Hotel, on N. 29th St. in Billings. They did quite well there, but Dad's heart finally caught up with him. He died 3 December 1939 and on 5 Dec was buried near Kathryn in the cemetery at Hardin. His old friend H.W.Bunston, acted as Worshipful Master during the Masonic rites at the grave. While his tombstone shows "1868-1939", he was born in 1867. GAC.

3. In Ref. 1b, Elisha Corwin, in two separate statements, named G.F. Corwin as son.

WIFE - Neva Diadami Armstrong
BIRTH-MAR-DEATH: Based on my (Gerald A. Corwin her son. GAC) personal knowledge, further document by Ltr from Registrar, Grinnell Collage, Grinnell, IA, dated 13April 1988; Adair Co., IA, "Clerk's Certificate as to marriage Record"; and MT "Certificate of Death" #66 2232, all myfile FGR #1. GAC.

2. Mother attended Corning Acadamy and was awarded a Bachelor of Philosophy degree on 12 Jun 1907 by Grinnell Collage, Grinnell, IA 50112.

3. Not long after Dad passed away, Mother sold the lease on the Broadway Hotel and ought the residence at what is now (1987) 2416 Ash Street in Billings. She bought it from the builder who had designed it so it could conveniently accommodate students of the then Eastern Montana Normal School (Now Eastern Montana Collage). There was a community kitchen in the basement, with cupboards so each roomer could keep a separate supply of food; the refrigerator was shared on the honor system. Over the years quite a group of "Mrs. Corwin's Alumni" came into being, and I believe had periodic reunions.

4. I (GAC) lived at home (Broadway Hotel on Ask St. until Pearl Harbor. Soon after. I enlisted in the Army (Swearing in on Dec 18, 1941) and left home for good.

5. With the income from the rents, Mother fed and clothed herself and Alice, put Alice through Collage, saved enough so that when she sold the Ash Street property there was sufficient to pay the last expenses and leave more of an estate than I'll ever bequeath! GAC

Child 2 - Kathryn Neva Corwin
1. Reference: Notes below are of my own personal knowledge. GAC
2. Kathryn and I were quit close, being separated in age by only 21 months and having grown up with no close neighbors (3 miles to the nearest then at the ranch on Wagonbox Coulee). To visit them we went by horseback, walked, or rode in the "jitney" (Model T) when the folks were visiting neighbors.
From the ranch we attended Community School, five and a half miles away. (on mornings when the thermometer registered less than 0 degrees Fahrenheit, my Father ruled that we did not have to go to school. Now, about 65 years later, I can still remember peeking from my bed on the porch, anxiously awaiting the verdict, as Dad examined the thermometer by the light of a kerosene lantern. In retrospect, I must have been 11 or so by then.

The first year or so, we made the trip to school by buggy, pulled by a gentle horse. Thereafter, we rode horseback.

As I've said elsewhere, we moved to Hardin, where the two of us attended High School. Alice Esther, who has been born the year before we moved, missed the horsemanship.

Kathryn went to Normal School, in Billings, and was teaching in various primary schools, soon after she got out of high school. In either 1935 or '36, she resumed her studies at the Eastern Montana Normal School (now Eastern Montana College) in Billings. She was an "A" student and Editor of the School's Annual (Yearbook), when it all came to a halt for her. (See penultimate paragraph of notes on G.F. Corwin. GAC)

Child 4 - Alice Esther Corwin
1. Alice Esther Corwin provided the information as toher Marrage, Names and dates and places of birth of her children.
2. For the following, I take the responsibility. GAC. Sep 1087.
a. Alice was born in Hardin, 26 Jan 1927.
b. She must have started grade school in Martinsdale, as I had some years before, but as I was away from home at the time, I've no personal recollection of it. In the fall of 1936, she started her studies in Billings, continuing on through High School there.
c. She began her college education at Cottey Collage, in Missouri, and finished out at Montana State College, graduating in 950.
d. She started teaching (Home Economics) t Baker MT, in 1950. She Met Willard Hayden there. I gave her away when they were married 30 Dec, 1951. Beyond mentioning the fact that they have had four beautiful children, I will leave the details of the marriage for her, at the time she puts together her personal history.
e. As of this date, she is in Alaska, on the lower Yukon, some 40-odd miles from the Bering Sea. She spends most of each week "out", travelling out on Monday with a bush pilot, taking several days to bring the sub-library of one or another of the Lower Yukon School District's twelve schools in shape, then returns to Mt Village, hopefully by Friday, for the weekend.

DEATH CLAIMS AUTO
VICTIM AT BILLINGS
Kathryn Corwin Dies of Injuries
Sunday Afternoon—Funeral
Held Here Tuesday.
While the people of this community were prepared for the word that was passed last Sunday evening that Miss Kathryn Corwin had succumbed to the injuries received just a week before when she was struck down on the streets of Billings by an automobile driven by a reckless driver, an account of which was published in last week's issue of the Hardin Tribune-Herald, nevertheless they had hoped against hope that this young woman who was born in Hardin, May 12, 1915, had attended the Hardin schools from the primary through the grades, had grown into a beautiful womanhood and was graduated with honors from the Hardin high school with the class of '32, might survive. The news of her death brought sorrow to the hearts of the people of this community.
Kathryn Corwin was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald F. Corwin, long highly respected residents of' the Hardin community, where Mr. Corwin was a prominent stockman until a few years ago when his business interests took the familv to Martinsdale, where they have since made their home. After graduating from high school, she took four quarters at the Eastern Montana Normal school and the ensuing year taught the school at Nine Mile, north of Hardin. The following year she was elected to teach in the Martinsdale school, where she taught until last year, when she again entered the Eastern Montana Normal and would have completed her course in June. She was popular among her classmates and had an excellent scholastic record.
Her mother and her brother, Gerald Armstrong Corwin, a student at Montana State College at Bozeman, were with her when death came. Because of illness I due to a recent heart attack, her , father did not arrive in Billings until the day after her death.
After being viewed by friends at Smith's funeral home in Billings between 11:30 to noon, Tuesday, the body was brought overland to Hardin and funeral services were held at the First Congregational church of Hardin at 2:30 that afternoon. The church was filled to capacity, while hundreds stood on the lawn outside during the services. It was one of the most largely attended funerals ever held in Hardin.
The Rev. I. L. Cory of Billings, who was pastor of the Hardin church for eight years during Kathryn Corwin's childhood, assisted by Rev. N. E. Hannaut, present pastor of the church, officiated. A brief tribute to Kathryn Corwin was paid by Dr. L. B. MuMululen, president of the Eastern Montana Normal, where she was an honor student.
The floral offerings were banked in front of the chancel rail, forming a bower completely across the church, mute but beautiful! , testimonials of the regard in which the young woman was held by the people among whom she had spent the greater part of her young life. Three hymns were sung by the Eastern. Star Trio comprising Mrs. J. J. Ping, Mrs. W. J. Brekke and Mrs, W. A. Ransier, accompanied by Miss Marian Brekke, '"Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me," "Near to the Heart of Jesus" and "I Sleep, but Love Still Wakens."
Active pallbearers were Geo. S. McDowell, Frank J. Buzzetti, 'E.' L. Kelley, Chas. S. Eder, of Hardin, and Roy J. Covert and Fred Mitchell of Billings. The honorary pallbearers, all members of her graduating class were Lois Barrows, Fern Candee, LaVaune Larsen, Frances Turner," Mrs. Arvilla Turner, Mrs. Gwendolyn Elder, Frank Dorniberger, Melvin Harris, James Torske, Richard Mielke, John Mielke and Joseph Lammers. Interment was in the family plot in the Hardin cemetery.
