Boundary Waters
1998
This page is dedicated to my Mom. Who at the age of 51 years young, experienced the Boundary Waters Wilderness for the first time.

tonic of wildness. We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and
some life pasturing freely where we never wander." ...Thoreau

On the first night it became apparent that Mom was going to tend the fire and cook the meals. Here she is cooking steaks on a stick for dinner. It's our first night and real meal in the Boundary Waters. |
Our tent site was back in the woods, snuggled between the towering white pines. Though it took us some time to figure out how to set up the tent, we were able to finish before night fell upon us despite our laughter. |

The waves lapped up against the rocks on the shoreline the entire second day. It was cold as the wind blew directly into camp. At first, I regretted our choice of campsites. |
As the 2nd day came to completion, the winds died down and we witnessed a beautiful sunset. |

As the sun set, the sky gaves us a spectacular show of colors. We went to bed anticipating a new day filled with sunshine and good paddling. Unfortunately we were greeted with a cold rain. As we paddled through Tuscorora Lake, we opted to head back to the outfitters for a warm shower and dry clothes. We hoofed in through the 366 rod Tuscorora portage in pouring rain only to be greeted by high winds at Missing Link Lake. |
We
then arrived at Round Lake, only to be greeted by a torrential downpour
and then snow accompanied by thunder and lightening. We decided to wait
it out , even though we could see the outfitter's landing just across the
lake. I was quoted as saying "F**king Wilderness". Shortly thereafter
the rain eased up and we made for the other side of the lake heading
directly into the waves. It seemed like we'd never get to the other
side, but somehow we made it.
I look back at my experience as one of great joy. I helped to fulfill my
mom's lifelong dream of canoeing in the Boundary Waters and was able to
share three of the best days of my life with my Mom, Katie George.
