KINGS OFF TO AIR CANADA CUP WESTERN REGIONAL
The Thunder Bay Investors Group AAA, Midget Kings head off to Kenora Wednesday to participate in the four team round-robin Air Canada Cup Western Regional Championship. The event kicks off Thursday afternoon at the Kenora Recreation Center. Competing with the Kings will be the Saskatoon Contacts, Southwest Cougars and the host Kenora Stars.
Saskatoon, the champions of the Saskatchewan AAA, midget league, will be Thunder Bay's first opponent. The two sides will meet Thursday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. (C.S.T.) at the Kenora Recreation Center.
Friday the Kings will square off with the Manitoba champion Southwest Cougars. Southwest, based out of Souris, Man., defeated the Pembina Valley Hawks three games to two to advance to the regional. The game goes at 5:30 p.m. (C.S.T.).
The host Kenora club will meet the defending Air Canada Cup champion Kings Saturday afternoon in a 12:30 p.m. (C.S.T.) start.
The Kings, who have a record of 51-9-3 on the year, expect tough competition in their effort to repeat as Western Region champs. "Every game will be intense and we'll have to go hard every shift if we hope to be successful" said Kings captain Stephen Silversides. Kings alternate captain Kyle Shaen, who along with captain Silversides are the only returnees from last year's championship team, knows what to expect in Kenora. "It will be without question the best competition we've faced all season. We've had a good week of practice and the coaches have done a great job getting everyone set" stated Shaen.
The top two clubs in the round-robin will meet Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (C.S.T.) in the championship game. The winner of that contest will advance to the Air Canada Cup National Midget Hockey Championship April 21-26 in Sudbury.
