RAMS' NEEDS

Tuesday, April 14, 1998

By Jim Thomas
Since moving to St. Louis in 1995, the Rams have paid more attention to the offensive line than any other position on draft day. They've selected five blockers in the past three drafts - four of whom were taken in the top four rounds.

They'll probably go shopping early once again on the OL, as they try to shore up the interior of the line. But line coach Jim Hanifan realizes the team has other pressing needs as well - namely running back and the defensive line - so he figures to take a back seat in the first round.

If LSU guard Alan Faneca, projected as a late first-round selection, is still on the board when the Rams pick early in the second (No. 36 overall), Hanifan may jump up on the head table in the "war room" to plead his case.

Among the top two offensive line prospects, the Rams had Florida State's Tra Thomas in for a predraft visit, but not San Diego State's Kyle Turley. But the Rams know all about Turley, because Hanifan's new offensive line coaching assistant - Ed White - was Turley's position coach in college.

Barring some draft trade with Arizona involving Wayne Gandy, the Rams are set at tackle with Gandy and Orlando Pace the starters, and top backup Fred Miller. They also think youngster Ethan Brooks has some potential.

The top three guards are Zach Wiegert, Ryan Tucker and John Gerak. Free agent pickup John Flannery will push starter Mike Gruttadauria at center and provide depth at guard.
