Rams on the Verge

09/15/98

The Rams are 0-2 for the first time since 1987. Tony Banks threw 4 INTs last week for the first time in his career. The players have gathered amongst themselves for two player-only meetings in the last three days. They have yet to score in the first quarter this year and have been outscored by a total of 48-17 in the first half. Rams fans at the TWA Dome have heaped a generous helping of boos upon the home team during the first halves of both losses. The players feel the slow starts may be the result of Vermeil's overly long practices and meetings throughout the week. Meanwhile, the Saints and Falcons are both 2-0 with what most Rams fans feel are decidedly less talented teams overall.

The situation looks pretty hopeless doesn't it?

Perhaps so if you listen to ESPN or St.Louis' own football expert Bernie Miklasz. But not if you listen to Dick Vermeil or any one of the 53 players on the Rams roster.

Somehow, these guys have the nerve to still believe in themselves after all of this. Somehow they still mention themselves in the same breathe that they talk about good football teams...

Dick Vermeil refuses to criticize his players or place blame after two very tough losses, during both of which, time expired on the Rams as they drove for the tying touchdown. He claims that if the Rams can clean up the penalties and turnovers, he still believes this could be a very good football team.

Last Sunday against a team that many have projected as an early favorite to compete for a Super Bowl bid, the Rams came out and did what we've seen them do time and time again. They shot themselves in the foot and self destructed to the tune of 24-10 at halftime.

Then something amazing happened. Despite James Brown and Terry Bradshaw all but writing off the game at halftime on television, despite Dennis Green putting in a vanilla gameplan and expecting to coast to the W in the second half, the Rams REFUSED TO QUIT!

For the second consecutive week, the Rams came roaring back in the second half tying the game twice after Minnesota had taken the lead and falling just a single foot short of the touchdown that would have sent the game into OT. Minnesota left the TWA Dome Sunday with a HUGE sigh of relief. They still weren't sure what hit them in the second half. From the looks on the Rams players faces in the lockerroom after the game, it was obvious that they were neither surprised with their incredible comeback effort nor satisfied with the loss. D'Marco Farr said it best, "We're going to make Buffalo pay for our pain."

The Rams are a team on the verge of something special.
