The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) began the World Cup championship tournament
in 1930 with the participation of 13 teams in Uruguay, South America. Sixty Eight years later, the 1998 World Cup
in France marks the ninth time the competition has been held in Europe. Countries in North, South and Central America
have hosted the Cup seven times. Brazil was the first team to retired the World Cup (called the Jules Rimet Trophy, after
FIFA's first presindent) in 1970 after winning it for the thrid time. Since 1974, the award has been known simply as the
FIFA World Cup. Two other nations have won the cup on three occations: Italy and Germany (Previosly W. Germany)
