The Realm is a ever-evolving game created by Sierra. You create a character from four classes (thieves, adventurers, wizards, warriors), develop their skills, equip them with armor and weapons and spells, and set out to gain experience by killing monsters. Sounds like a million other games? Well, here's the twist, the Realm is an online game...in other words, you and your character may interact with others players in different cities, states, countries, even hemispheres. =)
I've met some really great friends on Realm, and recommend that you try it out for 3 hours with a free demo character. Check it out! Here's a quick note. A lot of people enjoy roleplaying on the Realm, which is fine. I, however, am not a big fan of roleplaying, so, I won't pretend that I'm from some strange land, with some fantastic story. Just thought I'd get that out of the way. =)
Dontonio
This is my Realm character, Dontonio. Dontonio got his name from a saint, right after I saw the movie "The Saint." After my cousin and I ordered Realm, we had to wait for over a month to get our CDs in the mail, so, we already had names picked out and were ready to go. Unfortunately, our names weren't that original, I guess, and both of our choices were taken. I chose Dontonio and he came up with Boniface, and later (and permanantly)became Kron. Dontonio is a neutral adventurer.
The first time I ever played Realm, Kron and I went hunting, and met Tom. The three of us got along really well, and decided to create a guild (a sort of club)called the Court of Lawmen.
That was in May of '97. The Court of Lawmen is still together and
doing well. Our guild isn't really a roleplaying or goal-oriented group. We're all around the same age (18-24)and are really good, close friends. In the beginning we tried to say we'd chase jumpers (players who kill other players), help others, all that good stuff. But now, we just do what we want and have fun.
Check out Tom's and Kron's homepages. They are both very well-done.
The Grand Realm or Beta Realm is where the Realm's implementors are creating a new world for all of us to play with. It looks great: new character races (elves and giants to go along with humans), lots of new quests, equipment, skills, new battlefield interface, hunting groups of up to 6 members, and plenty of huge new areas to explore.
As for my personal experience with the Grand Realm, I feel mostly indifferent towards it. What I wanted was more area, more monsters, and the ability to get to levels higher than 100. What I got what was completely overwhelming. I feel like changing so much of a good thing is risky, but in the long run, will hopefully keep Realm above the competition.
Dontonio in beta has been like a cat, seeming to have 9 lives. He's been wiped over 10 times, and, I must admit, I lost interest in beta after a few weeks and went back to regular Realm.
