The first Olympic Champion from Japan was 23-year old triple jumper Mikio Oda, who won his event at Amsterdam on 2 August 1928.

18 Japanese athletes have been Olympic Champion prior to WW2 for a total of 15 Gold, although Kitei Son was a Korean who competed for Japan while his country was under Japanese occupation. He won the Marathon in 1936. His real name is Sohn Kee-Chung.
