Ireland
Before 1924, Irish athletes competed under the British flag. The first Irishman to become an Olympic champion was 25-year old tennis player John Boland who won the Singles and, together with German Fritz Traun, the Doubles, both on 11 April 1896. He complained bitterly about the lack of an Irish flag when the Union Jack was hoisted following the announcement of his victory.
