British India
India won the Field Hockey tournaments of 1928, 1932 and 1936. In fact, India went on to win the next three tournaments as well and thereby defending their title successfully five times in a row. They remained undefeated for 30 consecutive matches. Further Hockey Gold in 1964 and 1980 make up India's eight Olympic titles.
39 Indian hockey players have been Olympic Champion prior to WW2 winning a total of 3 Gold. Up to 1936, India competed as a dependency of Great Britain.
