Injury prone Greg Lloyd has been released. After a decent comeback year in '97, Greg has been injured yeat again. Also released was former Bear former Steeler CB Donnel Woolford. Both were picked up by Carolina.
Cowher is staying in Pittsburgh. He signed a long term deal in July. Thought to be the best young coach in the NFL, he will lead the Steelers to many more AFC Central titles. Steelers Fullback Tim Lester may be out untill October. Lester is known as "The Bus Driver". Not only is he Jerome Bettis's best friend, but he is also his lead blocker. Steelers head coach Bill Cowher may be headed to the Cleveland Browns. This is just a rumor, but Cowher may coach the expansion Browns in '99. Levon Kirkland and Jason Gildon have resigned. These two are a key part to the Steelers defense. Kirkland signed for big bucks and long term. Gildon signed 3 years $90 million. The Steelers have signed Viking DB Dewayne Washington. He will probably start at cornerback along with Chad Scott. He is very agressive, but is quick and covers decently. The Steelers have named former Viking quarter back coach Ray Sherman their new offensive coordinator. Ray is expected to help Kordell mature as a QB and build the offense around team MVP running back Jerome Bettis. One of the most important member of the Steelers defense, Joel Steed, has resigned. The 4-year 17 million dollar contract is the biggest contract in Steeler history. Joel Steed finally got the respect he deserves this year with a starting spot on the AFC Probowl team. The first Steeler to leave for free agency is Pro Bowl wide reciever Yancey Thigpen. It was expected that he may leave the team after this season for more money, and he did. Yancey signed the biggest WR contract in history for the Tennesee Oilers. $21 million for five years with a 5.25 million dollar signing bonus. Steelers offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has been named the Dallas Cowboys new head coach. Chan has been an offensive coordinator under coach Cowher for a few years and has been a head coach for division II college ball. Jerry Olsavsky has asked to be released by the Steelers from the last two years on his contract. Jerry O just wants to play football, and at Pittsburgh he was doing more watching than playing. He doesn't care how much he makes as long as he gets to play. With the Steelers he would have made $575,000 in the next two years.
