Hingis captured her ninth title of the season Sunday at the Toshiba Classic in San Diego for her second in as many weeks in California. Her only loss of the year came to Iva Majoli in the French Open final in June. The 16-year-old Hingis is 57-1 overall this year (54-1 in WTA Tour matches), including a perfect 33-0 on hardcourts. Last month, Hingis became the youngest Wimbledon winner this century. She also has won the Australian Open, the Sydney International, Pan Pacific Open, Open Gaz de France, the Lipton Championships, the Family Circle Cup and the Bank of West Classic in Stanford. Hingis' victim on Sunday was Monica Seles of the United States, who looks for revenge today against Sandrine Testud. The Frenchwoman ousted Seles in the third round of Wimbledon in July. Seles has compiled a 25-9 record this season and reached the finals of four events, but has come up short each time, twice to Hingis. Also today, third seed Amanda Coetzer of South Africa plays American Amy Frazier, defending champion Lindsay Davenport of the United States, who is 33-10 this season (20-4 on hardcourts), battles Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia, and Natasha Zvereva of Belarus faces Romanian Ruxandra Dragomir. Zvereva ousted seventh seed Irina Spirlea of Romania. Tuesday's winners were fifth seed Aranxta Sanchez Vicario of Spain, sixth seed Anke Huber of Germany, who lost just one game to Russian 16-year-old Anna Kournikova, eighth-seeded American Kimberly Po and unseeded American Venus Williams. The top four seeds all received first-round byes. First prize is $79,000.
