INTRODUCTORY READING

WELCOME TO THE BAC FU DO KUNG-FU SOCIETY - THE LONGEST ESTABLISHED CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS GROUP IN THE CANBERRA AREA.

OUR SOCIETY HAS BEEN TEACHING THE ART OF KUNG-FU IN THE A.C.T. CONTINUOUSLY SINCE 1969. OUR PRIMARY EMPHASIS IS ON TEACHING THIS FASCINATING ART AS AN EFFECTIVE MEANS OF SELF DEFENCE - SINCE WE BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A VERY NECESSARY COMPONENT OF MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING DUE TO THE INCREASE IN VIOLENT CRIME OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS.

OUR CHIEF INSTRUCTOR, SIFU DAVID CROOK, IS WIDELY RECOGNISED WITHIN AUSTRALIA AND OVERSEAS AS BEING ONE OF THE FOREMOST INSTRUCTORS IN THIS FIELD.

DESPITE OUR SELF-DEFENCE ORIENTATION, OUR STUDENTS HAVE ALSO DONE WELL IN SPORTS MARTIAL ARTS COMPETITION AND HAVE WON AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AND OTHER AWARDS.

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ENTER TOURNAMENTS WILL FIND THAT BAC FU DO TECHNIQUES ARE DIRECTLY RELEVANT TO FULL-CONTACT TRAINING. HOWEVER, TRAINING FOR SPECIFIC TOURNAMENT EVENTS IS CONDUCTED OUTSIDE OF NORMAL CLASSES, SO AS NOT TO DETRACT FROM WHAT WE FEEL IS THE MORE VITAL ASPECT OF SELF-DEFENCE TRAINING.

OUR SCHOOL IS AFFILIATED WITH NUMEROUS INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS AND SIFU CROOK WAS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE FEDERATION OF AUSTRALIAN KUNG-FU ORGANISATIONS AND THE AUSTRALIAN MARTIAL ARTS COUNCIL.HE IS ALSO A WELL-KNOWN FEATURE WRITER FOR MARTIAL ARTS MAGAZINES AND THE HOST OF AUSTRALIA'S PIONEER MULTI-STYLE MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING CAMP, "CAMP DAVID".

BECAUSE OF SIFU CROOK'S STANDING IN THE MARTIAL ARTS COMMUNITY, WE HAVE ACCESS TO SEMINARS BY TOP INTERNATIONAL AND AUSTRALIAN INSTRUCTORS AND ENJOY FRIENDLY RELATIONSHIPS WITH MANY PRACTITIONERS OF MANY DIFFERENT STYLES. THIS IS VITAL TO A CONSTANT CROSS-FERTILISATION AND INTERCHANGE OF IDEAS.

WE HOPE THAT YOU ENJOY YOUR FREE INTRODUCTORY LESSON AND JOIN OUR SOCIETY. IF YOU DO SO, WE WISH YOU ALL THE BEST IN YOUR FUTURE KUNG-FU TRAINING!

GENERAL BACKGROUND

As stated earlier, our society is the longest established Chinese Martial Arts group in the ACT. It is the only one to have a fully qualified, internationally recognised Master Instructor resident in the area and the only one to teach all aspects of Kung-Fu. By contrast, most other ACT Martial Arts schools only see a senior instructor when grading time comes around and many only teach a partial approach to personal self defence.

During your training, you will be given tuition in techniques which are effective at all ranges of combat - you will be exposed to striking, kicking, punching and grappling skills; to groundfighting and weaponry skills; to training in traditional and environmental weaponry. You will learn how to defend against common street tactics, holds and weapons such as knives, clubs etc. At the same time, you will be shown ancient Taoist therapeutic breathing exercises and introduced to modern concepts of physical conditioning

Go out and check the way other schools operate - you will find that many classes are taught by fairly inexperienced "instructors" and you will find that they do not offer as well rounded a training program as we do. If you are not taught how to defend yourself in all situations, whether standing or on the ground; if you are not able to function against multiple opponents or against people armed with knives etc, then you are being put at risk.

To survive in the street you need skills other than those which enable you to score points at Martial Arts tournaments and similar sporting events! We intend to give you those skills.

TECHNICAL BASIS OF BAC FU DO KUNG-FU

Our teachings are based on a combination of three styles of Chinese Martial Art - Wing Chun, Choy Li Fut and Bok Pai Sil Lum. The purpose behind the creation of an eclectic style is to give you a well rounded, technically complete combat system - one which will give you a good chance of surviving violent encounters.

Many styles concentrate on certain aspects of combat - they are good at long range kicking or at close range punching or at grappling. This is all very good, as long as their attackers stick to the techniques which they are familiar with - but not so good if they do not! By comparison, an eclectic system is less likely to become locked in to an inappropriate combat strategy and is more likely to offer techniques which deal with a wide range of possible approaches.

In order to function at maximum effectiveness, it is essential that we "internalise" our Martial Arts techniques and this is possible only if we use techniques that are appropriate to our own physical and mental characteristics.

Too many instructors expect students to adopt techniques that are appropriate to the instructor's personal needs, but not to the student's. An eclectic style offers a wider range of techniques from which students may consolidate a personal repertoire of techniques which suit the physical and mental/psychological needs of the individual.

As stated earlier, Bac Fu Do Kung-Fu is an eclectic style, based on components of three major styles of Kung-Fu:

· Choy Li Fut - a style with good close and medium range moves; a wide range of hand and leg techniques and a particularly effective approach to multi-opponent situations. It uses effective straight punches, combined with powerful circular hand techniques and fluid kicking skills;

· Wing Chun - this is the style which the late Bruce Lee practiced, before founding his own eclectic style of Jeet Kune Do. Sifu Crook studied under Grandmaster Cheung Cheuk-hing, the man responsible for Bruce Lee's training. Wing Chun is basically a close range style, recognised by its rapid fire short punching and striking techniques and aggressive drives into an opponent. It is particularly effective in enclosed spaces, but somewhat lacking in multi-opponent situations; and

· Bok Pai Sil Lum - a long range style characterised by its fluid kicks and relaxed hand techniques. It is also rich in Chin Na (grappling) and Kum Na (groundfighting) skills and is particularly effective in open spaces.

As you can see, a combination of the above styles offers a wide range of techniques and tactical/strategic options. When combined with Sifu Crook's studies in Ju-Jutsu, Atemi-Jutsu and other related disciplines, it is evident that our training offers something that many other schools cannot.

KWOON SPIRIT ANIMAL

The White Tiger is our Kwoon's "spirit animal". It is a mythological Taoist beast, with the following characteristics:

· it is the messenger of the Gods and signifies Death. This reminds us that Kung-Fu is an art capable of inflicting serious injury and death and must not be used irresponsibly

· it is the guardian of the Heavenly Treasures. We regard the techniques and traditions of Kung-Fu as such treasures, which we must nurture and guard against abuse;

· it can only be ridden by the Gods, Immortals or Magicians. This reminds us that the path to success in Kung-Fu is not an easy one, attainable by just anyone. It requires sweat, effort, patience and perserverance to get anywhere;

· it is the token spirit of gamblers and its name is invoked for good luck. This reminds us that all combat is a gamble and that even the expert Martial Artist can have a bad day and fall before an inferior opponent; and

· it dwells in the Underworld and can see in the dark. This a most useful combat skill and one that we emulate by practising various sensitivity exercises, including blindfolded sparring training at the higher skill levels.

In addition to the above, we try to emulate the tiger's aggression and courage in combat, its relaxation in repose and its uncanny stalking ability.

KWOON EMBLEM

Our emblem is a pentagon containing the Yin/Yang symbol. Both have enormous significance for Kung-Fu adherents:

· The pentagon is symbolic of the figure 5, which appears in many aspects of Chinese life, much like our Lucky Number 7. There are, for example, 5 Animals of Kung-Fu (Tiger, Leopard, Crane, Dragon, Snake); 5 Families of Kung-Fu (Choy, Li, Mok, Hung, Lau); 5 Elements (Earth, Fire, Metal, Wood, Water); 5 External Co-ordinations (Eyes, Mind, Hands, Waist, Foothold); 5 Internal Co-ordinations (Spirit, Purpose, Endurance, Internal Power, Trained Strength) and 5 Cardinal Principles of Bac Fu Do (Advance Obliquely, Divert, Intercept, Penetrate, Press).

· The Yin/Yang symbol, the Liang-i, represents the duality of all things and reminds us of the need to maintain balance in everything that we do. It symbolizes Male/Female, Night/Day, Hardness/Softness, Substantiality/Insubstantiality etc. Taoist philosophy in this regard has had a profound effect on Kung-Fu tactics and strategies and opens our minds to the most appropriate uses of our Martial Arts techniques, according to the circumstances and environment prevailing at the time

CLUB RULES OF CONDUCT

It is not easy to succeed in Kung-Fu and you must have the correct attitude if you wish to get anywhere. All Martial Arts clubs have rules of conduct governing their members - designed to make life easier for everyone in the long run and to cultivate the spirit of perserverance and dedication that is needed to succeed in any course of study or human endeavour. Our rules are fairly simple common sense ones:

· RULE No 1 - ALWAYS BOW ON TO THE SIFU (INSTRUCTOR) BEFORE JOINING IN TRAINING. This is a sign of respect for your teacher, which he or she will return

· RULE No 2 - ALWAYS BE PUNCTUAL. You disturb other students if you come late into class. If you are unavoidably late, BOW ON and take your place in class quietly

· RULE No 3 -DO NOT TALK LOUDLY DURING CLASS. This distracts other students and is a sign of disrespect to your Sifu

· RULE No 3 - KEEP WORKING - DO NOT SLACKEN OFF DURING CLASS. A consistent effort is needed if you want to learn effective self defence skills

· RULE No 4 - PAY STRICT ATTENTION TO THE SIFU AND OTHER INSTRUCTORS. You are paying for tuition and wish to receive value for your hard-earned dollars! Besides this, it is disrespectful to the instructors and could result in personal injury, as a result of a poor understanding of the techniques you are practicing

· RULE No 5 - ONLY PRACTICE THOSE TECHNIQUES THAT YOU HAVE BEEN SHOWN BY AN INSTRUCTOR. Improperly practiced techniques can lead to personal injury, through strained muscles or even through you getting accidentally hit by a fellow student;

· RULE No 6 -TREAT OTHER STUDENTS WITH RESPECT. If you see another student having difficulties with his training, do NOT ridicule him - he is probably trying his best. Respect him for his perserverance and help him, if you can;

· RULE No 7 - MAKE YOURSELF INTO A GOOD MEMBER OF THE KWOON. You will gain many benefits by joining in Kwoon activities and meeting your fellow members. There are people from many walks of life in our Kwoon and you may enrich your life by associating with them;

· RULE No 8 - TRY TO IMPROVE THE KWOON. If you have any suggestions for improving the way we do things, do not hesitate to bring them to the notice of the Sifu;

· RULE No 9 - ALWAYS ADDRESS INSTRUCTORS BY THEIR CORRECT TITLE WHEN IN CLASS. We use the terms "SIFU" for the Chief Instructor, "SI DAI" for Red Sash Instructors and "SI HING" for Red/Gold Sash Instructors;and

· RULE No 10 - DO NOT LEAVE THE CLASS AREA UNNECESSARILY. You are allowed to leave the class to get a drink of water during training and for other unavoidable reasons! Do not leave it for other reasons, without letting an instructor know about your absence.

MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF ALL!!!

REMEMBER - THE PROGRESS THAT YOU MAKE WILL BE DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE EFFORT THAT YOU PUT INTO YOUR TRAINING! THE SIFU CAN ONLY GUIDE YOU - HE CANNOT SWEAT FOR YOU OR LEARN FOR YOU. THERE IS NO EASY WAY TO SUCCESS AND YOU WILL ONLY RISE ABOVE THE MEDIOCRE BY HARD TRAINING AND DEVOTION!

As you will appreciate from the following comments, our reputation is quite good for a Kwoon of our size:

"We have complete faith and trust in the integrity of this respected Master to fulfill his duties in the furtherance of world and international Martial Arts." Master F N Newton, President, International Union of Martial Artists

"Your school is one of the most senior in Australia and I have been informed by many Martial Arts leaders that your school is one of high standard and integrity." Sifu G Wickson, Chief Instructor, Lung Chi Self Defence Schools, Queensland
