2004 HCTA Highlights

2004 Columbia Junior Open Tennis Tournament

127 players representing eight different age categories for both girls and boys played in this year's Columbia Junior Open Tennis Tournament.  With the assistance of the local community in helping to sponsor this tournament, we achieved much success in making this event both competitive and fun for those that participated. The HCTA wishes  to recognize the following local businesses that helped make this tournament possible:

  • Bagel Bin
  • Born Printing
  • Colony Title, LTD
  • Columbia Association
  • Eyre Travel
  • Giant Food
  • HOF Laundry Systems
  • Howard County General Hospital
  • Princeton Sports
  • Sandy Spring National Bank
  • The Rouse Company
  • Williamsburg Group

A special presentation was made at the tournament to Julia Facchina, a Howard County resident who started out in some of our earlier programs 8 years ago and dedicated herself to be the best player she could be.  Julia was this year’s Columbia Junior Open’s girls 18's champion and finished as the runner-up in the Maryland State High School tournament.  She not only exceeded those expectations, but even more importantly, she developed into a model citizen, on and off the tennis court, that truly exemplified the core values and principles our association operates under.  For these reasons, HCTA presented Julia with a Certificate of Special Recognition, along with a check for $1,000.  Julia is enrolled at Virginia Tech and will start her freshman year in September 2004.

The winners of this tournament will be reported shortly.

2004 HCTA Scholarship Winners: Merideth Marr and Pieter Vismans

The 2004 Howard County Tennis Association Senior Scholarship Awards were given to Merideth Marr of Howard High School and Pieter Vismans of Glenelg High School. Ms. Marr plans to attend Salisbury University, and Georgia Tech is Mr. Visman' s  college choice. This is the 5th consecutive year that the HCTA has given this scholarship to Howard County high school seniors who have contributed to their tennis team and plan to attend college. The scholarship will provide $1000 to help defray college expenses. Our best wishes go to Merideth and Peter for success in their collegiate pursuits!
