Spar Mid Wales League

11.1.97 Aberystwyth Town Res 5-5 Caersws Res
A freak Ceefax confusion meant that we found out about this game as we were considering going to see Carmarthan v Cwmbran. A games which Surrey Dave still wanted to see in spite of the Aber withdrawl symptons I was starting to suffer. The Green & Black reserves, who included among their number today Martyn Griffiths, Dai Blair, Gavin Allen, Wyn Thomas and Martyn Davies, play in quarters and are sponsored by Jimmy's Taxis not Cambrian Tyres. The pitch was heavy but playable and the game was excitement from beginning to end. Caersws took the lead after 25 and added to it on 32. The Aber defence looking fragile, Richard Morgan in goal looking a little suspect on the thought patterns. Just before the break, Martyn Davie pulled one back for Aber, he linked up well throughout with Gav and the midfield. It was Mr. Allen himself who levelled it on 46 minutes, beating the Caersws defence forhoots and stroking it in, as he nearly did minutes later when the ball hit the post and the Caersws defence forgot to tackle. However, the boys in blue and white came back, making it 3-2 around the hour mark and appearing to be back in control, having weathered the Aber revival. But no! Martyn Davies made it 3-3 after 77 minutes. The games appeared to be heading for that end result as pressure after this resulted in few shots for either team. Caersws scored twice in four minutes to put the game, apparently, beyond doubt. Again Aber replied. On 88 minutes, a wonder header from Martyn Griffiths and on the next attack, a dance of wonder through the defence from Gav, ball to middle and Daniel Jones scored. We helped replace divots at the end, even after they switched the lights off on us. Apparently there's a Welsh Youth Cup tie here tomorrow. We may even be at that.
