Welsh Youth Cup
26.1.97 Aberystwyth Town Youth 1-1 Swansea City Youth
And when the dust settled, there was still a replay to be held. Those from
the fair city in the south will be disappointed but Aber deserved their
draw after a cavalier charge type of game in which Wyn Thomas scored
rather than was sent off. Dewi still complained about him hitting the bar
from close in later, though. The Green and Blacks took the lead within
fifteen minutes when a Bamford corner fell to Wyn and he had to time to
do his "prep" before blasting it in. He celebrated wildly and smiled
for quite some time after. Swansea missed a penalty in the first hald
by firing the ball straight at Richard Morgan. The team in white had
most of the attacking possession throughout but could not make the
pressure tell. Half time saw us briefly study the Barry v Caernarfon
game on the TV before falling out of the social just in time to see
the restart. Swansea equalised on 55 minutes and both teams had plenty
of chances after that. Hag Harris was the ref again, but there were
proper linesmen this time. The crowd looked to be nudging over a 100
which is more than saw Briton Ferry firsts yesterday. Good skills all
round and a good game too. Surrey Dave was also thrown around a bit
as an added bonus.

Welsh Youth Cup
12.1.97 Aberystwyth Town Youth 2-1 Inter Cable-Tel Youth
Well, that WAS fun. The youngsters of Aber produced a confident first
half and struggled in the second, and the youngsters from Cardiff were
just not very good. And they called Richley many offensive names. But
both teams have the arrogance that I would have if I were a year younger
and on the books of a football club, The game started off in mediocrity
and got worse from there. Both sides relished the surface which gave
them a chance to practice their two footed lunges, referee Hag Harris
tried to keep control but his attempts were doomed to fail. Still, the
Burger King sponsored Aber lads won. Taking only a 1-0 ead into the
second half (it should have been more), they went 2-0 up with ten
minutes left after the #8 added to his earlier tap in with a solid
header. Cable-Tel pulled one back in injury time but there was still
time for Wyn Thomas and an Inter player to be sent off for fighting.
The players looked skillful enough, and I suppose the surface must
take a share of the blame for today's game (at one stage it looked
like itwas going to be played at Penparcau) but even so, the future of
League of Wales football does not look as rosy on a muddy winter's
afternoon as perhaps it should.
