14.9.96 Connah's Quay Nomads 4-1 Aberystwyth Town
Last season, when Afan Lido visited Park Avenue, I found myself wondering
why anybody would follow a team that scores few goals, plays uninteresting
football and never wins. I'll keep an open mind next time. Andy came from
Chatham to see this one, a good few made the journey from Aber, and then
the Green and Blacks get hammered. The halfwayGround is built on a diagonal
slope which Aber ran up in the first half in black shorts and down in the
second half wearing new white ones. The referee apparently objected to every
person on the field wearing black. The Nomads' defence is a well organised,
tough (Tough! They made Gillingham look cultured! Ed) unit that Aber only
truly broke twice. A Martyn Griffiths' header was well saved and his divine shot
from twenty three yards kept the Seasiders in the game after they had fallen
behind two minutes earlier. The Town defence leaks too much, seemingly unable
to stand firm, and the early loss of Rhodri Thomas (ankle injury) meant
tat it was up to Kinninmouth to keep the scoreline respectable, which he did
in superb style. Half time 1-1, Full time 4-1. Connah's Quay didn't take all
their chances, their distance shooting was poor, but they ran Aber ragged in
the final thirty minutes. And that's that. Meirion Appleton must be getting a bit
concerned now, the chairman gave him a few words of encouragement at half
time, but two points from six games is no way to avoid the perilous drop
to the real non leagues of Welsh football. At least Leeds lost.
