Central rally falls short for 5th place

In the last game of the season, the Golden Eagles fell behind to ESD Champion Yankton early, then put together runs to get close, but could never quite get over the hump in a 49-43 loss in the consolation championship Saturday in Sioux Falls. The Gazelles had a 10 point lead, 42-32, with 3 minutes left in the game, but the Eagles scored seven points in a row to cut the lead to three with two minutes remaining. Dawn Sillman started the rally with a three pointer, followed by a steal and layup by junior Tonia Burgard. Katie Norman hit a basket after another Gazelle turnover. Heather Nelson hit a big basket for Yankton to put the lead at 44-39, but that was anwered by a basket by Laura Graf to pull the Eagles back to within three at 44-41. Yankton made 5 of 6 freethrows in the last 46 seconds, and Cental could not get any closer. The Eagles were led in scoring for the third straight game by Sillman, who scored 15 points. Aberdeen Central finished the season at 15-9 and in sixth place at the State AA Tournament in their second straight trip to the tourney.
