Eagles sweep season series from Arrows

Aberdeen Central battled a determined Watertown Arrow team and came away with a hard fought 55-51 victory Thursday night. The game was tight throughout, with a tie score after one quarter, and Aberdeen Central holding leads of 1 and 2 points at the next respective quarter breaks. In the first half, Watertown matched the Eagles scoring, thanks to 14 first half points from Stacey Schooley, many coming on tough baskets from both inside and outside. The Eagles used balanced scoring to lead 28-27 at the half. The Eagles were able to build a lead of six points early in the fourth quarter, but the Arrows rallied to take a one point lead with just over 3 minutes remaining in the game. The lead was short lived, however, as junior Tonia Burgard hit a 15 footer on the next possesion to give the Eagles the lead for good. Central was able to control the rebounds the final 3 minutes and made key freethrows down the stretch to finish off the win. With the win, Aberdeen Central improves to 7-4 on the season, and 5-3 in the ESD. The win, coupled with a Yankton loss, means that Aberdeen Central controls its own destiny in winning the ESD title. Next action for the Eagles is Saturday night when they travel to Brandon Valley to take on the Lynx.
