Eagles open with victory over Arrows
Aberdeen Central opened up the 1997 season by using veteran leadership down the stretch. The Golden Eagles broke open a tie game heading into the fourth quarter by outscoring Watertown 15 - 7 in the final frame to post a 43 - 35 victory over the Arrows Saturday night at the Civic Arena. A combination of first game jitters, foul trouble, and good pressure defense from the Arrows kept the game close throughout the first half, with Central owning a slim 2 point halftime lead. After jumping out to a 26 -20 lead midway through the third quarter on a basket by Rebecca Goodman, the Arrows scored 8 of the next 10 points to tie the game heading into the final quarter. Big baskets by veterans Goodman, Laura Graf, and Emily Graf down the stretch gave the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. The Eagles also hit on 8 of 10 freethrows in the last six minutes to clinch the win. The Eagles are now 1 - 0, while Watertown falls to 0 - 2. Next action for Aberdeen Central is Thursday night when they host the Brookings Bobcats at the Arena.
