Golden Eagles upend Washington

Aberdeen Central advanced to the consolation championship by defeating Sioux Falls Washington in Friday afternoon action at the State AA basketball tourney in Sioux Falls. Poor freethrow shooting hurt the Eagles in the first half, but the resilient Eagles improved things in the second half on their way to a 51-43 win over the Warriors. Aberdeen Central shot only 27 percent from the line and 21 percent from the field in the first half, and only trailed by 10 points at halftime thanks to their solid defensive game. After being challenged by their head coach in the locker room at halftime, the Golden Eagles methodically started their comeback in the third quarter when all five starters scored. The Eagles chipped away at the ten point defecit and trailed by five to start the final quarter. Seniors Laura and Emily Graf started the fourth quarter by making four freethrows, and a basket by Dawn Sillman cut the Washington lead to 34-33 with six minutes left in the game. In the final 6 minutes, Katie Norman stepped up her play. The junior missed two freethrows, but rebounded her own miss and scored to give the Eagles their first lead of the game 35-34. In the closing minutes of the game, Norman sank 9 of 10 freethows to finish with 16 points. The Eagles were again led in scoring by Dawn Sillman, who followed up a 20 point opening round game with a 19 point effort Friday. The Eagles will play ESD rival Yankton on Saturday for 5th place.
