Eagles fall to defending champion Fargo Shanley

The Fargo Shanley Deacons showed why they are the number one ranked team in Noth Dakota Saturday night with some key plays in the fourth quarter in dealing Aberdeen Central its second straight loss, both coming to last years' state championship teams from both South and North Dakota. Shanley used a tough trapping style of play to get out of the blocks fast en route to a 17-4 first quarter lead. Aberdeen Central did not roll over and die, however, and clawed their way back to within 6 points at halftime, thanks to good transition against the Shanley pressure. The Eagles continued their run into the 3rd quarter, sparked by Emily Graf's 10 points in the quarter, at one time owning a 43-41 lead with a minute to play in the quarter. The fourth quarter belonged to the Deacons, though, holding the Eagles scoreless for the first 5 minutes of the final frame. All-American candidate Angie Welle dominated the lane scoring 33 points and pulling down 18 rebounds to help her team. The Eagles were led by senior guard Dawn Sillman's 15 points. The loss drops the Eagles to 3-2 on the season. Next action for the Eagles is Tuesday night in Huron, before traveling to Rapid City and Pierre next weekend.
