Eagles pop the Kernels
The Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles ended nine years of frustration Saturday night by defeating perennial powerhouse Mitchell 46-41 at the Civic Arena. The victory is the first over the Kernels since October 3, 1987. The Eagles led the entire game, leading 12-7 at the end of one quarter and 21-20 at halftime. Senior Jen Murphy scored 6 points in a Central 10-0 run to start the second half stretching the lead to 31-20. However, Mitchell managed to claw back into the game, and pulled to within one, 36-35, on a three point play by Brandi Morgan with 6:11 left to play in the game. The Eagles put the game away down the stretch, hitting clutch free throws and making key stops on the defensive end. Katie Norman went 4-4 from the line in the last 40 seconds to ice the win for the Eagles, who improve to 3-0 on the season. Things do not get any easier for the Golden Eagles who host unbeaten Yankton next Friday night in a game that will give one team the outright lead in the race for the ESD title.
