Match Report

Belgium_Colombia Leekens started this preparation match for the World Cup with almots the same team as the one against France. The team was only changed on 3 positions : Leonard, who is not part of the selection anymore, was replaced by Vital Borkelmans. And Van Kerckhoven and Clement, who were not totally fit, didn't start as well. Danny Boffin and Enzo Scifo took their place in the team. Scifo did have to play as right-midfielder, a place where he has played several times this season for Anderlecht.

The Red Devils, for the occasion in a white shirt, started very nice at the match. They tried to go forward very quickly, and were able to create some nice chances. On an early center, Oliveira was just not able to head the ball into the goal. But after 15 minutes, the goal for Belgium was there : Oliveira centered very nicely to Danny Boffin, who could head the ball into the goal (1-0). The smallest player on the field scored with his head, but that was only because he was totally uncovered by the Colombian defense.

Colombia now had some nice chances too : Keeper De Wilde didn't hit the ball very well, but Asprilla couldn't put enough power on the ball to get it passed De Wilde. But it was again Belgium who could score the goal : Wilmots, one of the better players of this match, shot the ball from 25 meters, and even the keeper of Colombia couldn't stop this ball : 2-0 for Belgium.

The second half was much less exciting then the first half. There were a lot of bad passes on both sides. Colombia started going forward more often : Asprilla came alone before keeper De Wilde, but was not able to score. And when De Avila went down in the penalty-area, the referee didn't give a penalty to Colombia. Correct, as you could see in the replay, because De Wilde hadn't touched him.

The score didn't change anymore : 2-0. Belgium played a very good game, especially in the first half-time, when the combinations were very smooth. So it was a deserved victory for Belgium, after 4 games without victory against Norway, Romania, France and England. On Saturday the final test before the World Cup is scheduled : Belgium - Paraguay.
