Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense Techniques
by Royce Gracie, Charles Gracie, Kid Peligro (Contributor), Tom Page (Photographer)
This guide to the self-defense techniques taught in the classes of Royce Gracie, one of the biggest figures in the world of jiu-jitsu, provides lessons that anyone—regardless of strength or size—can learn to neutralize an attacker in seconds. It offers a variety of defenses to use against knife and gun attacks, as well as escapes from headlocks, choke holds, and other situations that attackers use on the street. Advice on practicing, falling and rolling, and following a specific diet make this book the next best thing to taking the classes that are popular with the United States military, police academies, and women's self-defense schools.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu : Theory & Technique
by Renzo Gracie, Royler Gracie, Kid Peligro (Photographer), John Danaher
The Brazilian jiu-jitsu style stems from the premise, garnered from analysis of actual street fights, that the outcome of any fight is decided on the ground. While most martial arts deal only with the initial punching and kicking stages of combat, Brazilian jiu-jitsu concentrates on ground combat. This guide shows how to use Brazilian jiu-jitsu to increase combat effectiveness. Photographs and step-by-step instructions show how to master the techniques used in this exciting new form of combat. Beautiful production & pictures. Tons of techniques. Excellent. Highly recommend.

Ruas tied with Brazilian Black Belt, Pinduca, in their match in Brazil. It's on the Gracie In-Action tape. It was the Luta Livre vs. BJJ showdown.

Frank Shamrock's Ultimate Fighting Method
by Frank Shamrock's
Frank Shamrock is perhaps the world's greatest no-hold-barred, full-contact fighting champion. He was won mixed-martial arts and anything-goes competitions all around the globe. This book is the first publication written by the man himself about his training methods, mental preparation and favorite fighting techniques. This is a complete guide to fighting, without rules, at any distance, as well as standing up or on the ground. A must for any serious martial artists or full-contact competitor, regardless of style. Shamrock defeated John Lober in the UFC after John had taunted Shamrock since Lober originally defeated Shamrock in Shamrock's first NHB fight.
In the UFC match, Shamrock took the fight to Lober standing up and on the ground until he made Lober admit defeat and wanted to stop. Shamrock also knocked out Enson Inoue with a vicious knee. An awesome match which showed a smaller Shamrock going toe-to-toe with a larger Inoue. Shamrock also gassed Tito Ortiz, a much bigger opponent. Shamrock pretty much rang the show and went after Tito standing up and on the ground. Shamrock revealed that his conditioning and self-pacing allowed him to dictate the match since he was never gassed. Tito was left gasping for air and clinging onto Shamrock's ankle while Shamrock pretty much slapped at Tito's head.

Kill-As-Catch-Can
: Wrestling Skills for Streetfighting
by Ned Beaumont, Holly Tuttle (Illustrator)
Catch-As-Catch-Can wrestling is
an old style of european wrestling which is pretty rare nowadays. Esai
Maeda competed in a European championship and fared well. The surviving
active legacy of this style of wrestling survives in Japan in the form
of shootfighting. Around 25 years ago, a German wrestler taught "shooting"
to a group of Japanese martial artists. The top wrestlers were known as
"hookers." They could hook or submit an opponent from numerous positions.
There are only a handful of men who know real catch wrestling. It's pretty
much a dying art. That's the "Kill-As-Catch-Can" reference. Brilliant turn
of phrasing huh?

a throw. The opponent is thrown usually to inflict harm and once on the
ground, strikes follow. The Chinese have a sports version of it.

by Cappy Kotz
It's a good introductory book for

It's not a very thorough and complete book on how to box. But most boxing
books are not very thorough. An excellent book is by Edwin Haislet. The
book actually is a condensed version of an old US Naval boxing instructional

everything from training to defense to offensive techniques. It only costs
ten dollars.

Dirty Tricks and Outlaw Killer Punches
by Champ Thomas, Jay C. 'Champ'
Thomas, Holly Tuttle (Illustrator)
Check out what others have to say.
I came across an interesting comment concerning Muay Thai kickboxing. Some
older practitioners lamented the fact that with gloves, modern practitioners
punch a great deal. In the past, they wore cotton bandaging and hitting
an opponent's skull hurt and can damage the hand easily so they punched
with considerably less frequency. I haven't got the foggiest idea what
"outlaw killer punches are."

Tao
of Jeet Kune Do
by Bruce Lee, Gilbert Johnson (Introduction)
The original. It was a collection
of Lee's personal notes on fighting with examples of techniques. The interesting
thing is that many of Lee's notes came from excellent sources such as boxing
champions who commented on boxing techniques. Unfortunately, many of the
books are out-of-print, so Lee's notes are a direct source of those techniques.
Lee also studied sports physiology to increase his reaction time and striking
ability.

Jeet
Kune Do : Bruce Lee's Commentaries on the Martial Way (The Bruce Lee Library,
Vol 3)
by Bruce Lee, John Little (Editor)
An improvement on "Tao of Jeet Kune
Do." After lee died, a very incomplete book of his notes was published
as "Tao of Jeet Kune Do." This book is far more complete and inclusive
of Lee's notes. There are interesting and rare pictures of Lee practicing
Judo throws while wearing a Judo gi. The small format of the book makes
the numerous sketches and drawings made by Lee a bit small. But it's a
great source for those interested in the fighting arts. Lee even has copious
notes and drawings all copied from currently out-of-print boxing books.

Lee's Fighting Method : Basic Training

Really good book. Lee was one of

would make them "muscle bound" and slow.

Very interesting. Lee was one of
the first to attack traditional martial arts such as Karate. He felt the

that Lee had. The pictures are also really cool. I just like the fact he's
demonstrating techniques wearing a black tank top, dress slack, and dress
shoes!

part of his wins to Lee's training.

Rickson Gracie: Choke (1999)
Done in documentary style, Choke takes an introspective look at the men--their goals, their dreams, and their families--who become the ultimate fighting machines in the ring at the 1995 Vale Tudo World Fighting Championship in Tokyo.
Delving into the life of the undefeated and undisputed world freestyle fighting champion, Rickson Gracie, a 30-year-old jujitsu expert from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this video displays a side that you rarely see in sports: the articulate, intelligent family man who turns his training into the art of movement and athleticism--not violence. It also explores the world of two men expected to offer a serious challenge to Gracie: American heavyweight kickboxer Todd "Hollywood" Hays and Japanese shootfighting heavyweight champion Koichiro Kimura. These two men provide some of the more uplifting moments in the documentary. Hays, who is also a member of the U.S. Olympic bobsled team, explains how he will use his performance money to fund his dream of buying a bobsled that will allow him to be a driver in the 1998 Winter Games. Kimura completes his training but then has to ask the permission of his elderly parents to compete. The big man bluffs his way through with a warm smile and a respectful manner.
This is a documentary covering the Vale Tudo Championship which showcased Rickson Gracie. It's a great documentary about Rickson and the locker room banter and strategizing is comical as well as enlightening. The footage of Rickson sparring at his school and his preparation is fascinating. It is a historical record of Rickson Gracie, who represents the last of his generation where Jiu-Jitsu was the fighting art of the ring and for self defense in the rough streets of Brazil. Vale Tudo means "Anything Goes." It's not a sport to Rickson but a testing ground for his family art.
Highly recommended.

Fighting: The Ultimate Battlecade (1997)
Damn, these tapes are cheap. Only
$9.99?! This one is really good. John Lewis, an American BJJ fighter, fights
and ties Carlson Gracie Jr. Jr. is the son of the famous Carlson Gracie.
Carlson is considered by Fabio Gurgel, to be one of the Gracie clan's great
champions. He fought Waldemar Santana a few times. He tied or defeated
Santana. Unfortunately, Lewis, a BJJ fighter himself nullified Jr.'s fight
game by simply hanging onto the fence. Lewis fought a smart fight. Jr.
was extremely humble and congratulated Lewis on the tie. Interesting enough,
Lewis fought similarly to Pele, a Brazilian NHB fighter, who's considered
an anti-grappler. He knows enough jiu-jitsu to deal with grapplers but
favors his trusty muay thai skills to give his opponents a beating. He's
earned a reputation for whupping BJJ fighters. Highly recommend.

no holds barred event. Royce fights in a tournament and defeats buff Ken
Shamrock with a choke. Every since that loss, Shamrock was gunning for
Royce. He got his wish when they set up a superfight just so these two
can settle their grudge. It's interesting that fighters from different
discipline rely on their background to try to defeat their opponent. It
just goes to show martial arts, boxing, wrestling, etc is not the equivalent
to NHB. You have to train specifically for these types of events. Of course,
Royce Gracie wins. You just have to see how quickly he ends up choking

caught in a simple armbar from the guard. The irony was that he used BJJ

Royce Gracie and had to tap furiously before his arm got mangled by Royce.

best; relying on anti-grappling and tries to stay on his feet. Royce can't
take him down and takes a few good strikes. Eventually, Royce gets the
guard on him and taps him out with an armbar. Royce takes the belt again
when he faces Dan Severn. This long match ends up with little Royce applying

Marco Ruas takes the belt. He coolly
dispatches his opponents. Ruas is a huge Luta Livre fighter who learned
a bit of BJJ. He then took a fight under the Luta Livre banner. The
BJJ community saw him as a traitor since Luta Livre was the rival style
to BJJ in NHB competition. Ruas was to fight Pinduca in the BJJ/Luta Livre
showdown. The showdown occured when the rivalry flared again and the gauntlet
was thrown down. Carlson Gracie assembled a NHB team and they matched their
fighters with the Luta Livre fighters. The "Ruas and Pinduca" fight can
be seen on the "Gracie In-Action" video series. It was actually a tie.
Ruas hammered Pinduca on the ground with strikes. Ruas would hammer backwith
strikes from the guard while Pinduca tried to pass Ruas' guard. Ruas uses
a neat leg lock on an unsuspecting opponent. Ruas takes out a plodding
massive Varelans for the belt with heavy muay thai leg kicks to the thigh.
Eventually, Varelans who's too conservative andplods along gets nailed
by a wicked leg kick to his thigh and actually falls over in agony. Ruas
quickly scrambles on Varelans to hammer him. Ruas appeared super relaxed
throughout ll of his fight. When he won the championship, he finally gets

Fighting Championship VIII, David Vs. Goliath (1996)
Great fight between Don Frye and
Gary Goodridge. Frye was the prototypical boxer/wrestler fighter. His ability
to grapple and to do standup marked the appearance of the crosstrainer.
He couldn't outwrestle a massive and strong Goodridge who at one point,
picks up Frye and flings him like a rag doll. Frye scrambles to get up
and nearly takes a kick to the head from Goodridge. Frye clinches with
Goodrige and puts his superior boxing ability to work as he dazes Goodridge
with uppercuts and hooks.
UFC 9 is quite good. It has a long
match between Don Frye and Amaury Bitetti. Bitetti is a top sports BJJ
fighter. He did an earlier NHB bout in Brazil. He actually got knocked
clean out by A capoeira stylist by the name of Mestre Hulk. Interesting
enough, Mestre Hulk knew a bit about the mount and grappling apparently
which he used to submit his opponents. With Bitetti, he and Bitetti just
brawled and Bitetti got tagged literally seconds into the match. Bitetti
kept trying to kept up and Hulk just hit him and Bitetti still tried to
kept up. Well, this was deja vu for Bitetti, who has a background in muay
thai gets outgunned by Frye. Frye outboxes Bitetti. When Bitetti tries
to go for the takedown, Frye cannily, relies on his superior wrestling
skills to nullify any attempt by Bitetti. Eventually, Bitetti eats too
many punches and can't mount an offensive. Frye simply sprawls and keps
Bitetti pinned and hammers him iwth elbows and knees.

Frank sets a murderous pace which leaves Tito helpless on the ground. John Lewis fights Lowell Anderson, a Rorion Gracie student. John outclasses Lowell standing up and on the ground. Mark Coleman, the monster-sized wrestling champion dispatches Don Frye, also a wrestler but with boxing skills. He was so confident when he faced a smaller kickboxer named Maurice Smith. Smith had a strategy. He weathered Coleman's ground and pound attack from the guard. Eventually, the big steroided wrestler wore himself out. Smith fought to get to his feet. Now it was his turn to dish it out. Eventually Coleman was gasping for air. Smith simply took his time to attack a defenseless Coleman. Smith threw a kick to Coleman's face which Coleman believed was aimed for his abdomen and cleanly knocked out Coleman. Mark Kerr also enters the NHB ring and manhandles his competition with his size and wrestling prowess.

UFC 15-Collision Course
Randy Couture, the wrestling champion, fights Vitor Belfort. An awesome fight with a bulked-up Vitor. Vitor tried to throw his straight blasts to knock out Randy. Randy, an older game wrestling champion used his old boxing techniques to good use. He tied up Vitor and with one arm behind Vitor's head, he uppercut Vitor and threw wicked hooks that eventually dazed Vitor. Randy also got to test Vitor's guard as he tried to ground and pound. The fight left a dazed Vitor on the ground semi-unconscious. He refused to submit.

Fighting Championship - VIDEO GAME
What do you get when you cross boxing, aikido, Greco-Roman wrestling, and more than 25 other fighting styles? If you answered Ultimate Fighting Championship, you're correct (if you answered by cowering under a desk, we don't blame you). This is not some soap opera of thrown chairs and unrealistic moves. Two fighters and a referee enter the Octagon--the UFC's caged, eight-sided ring--where the fighters meld martial-arts styles to receive points for hits, holds, and takedowns.
Ultimate Fighting Championship features over 20 of the top UFC fighters with their specific moves and likenesses. You'll choose from 3,000 moves and 1,200 combos and string them into devastating attacks. Training mode allows you to learn the martial-arts discipline or combine moves of different schools.
