The Squad For 96/97

Come on and meet the squad (details as correct as possible at the start of the season):

Goalkeepers

  • Stephen Pears - Age: 34. Apps: 0. Signed on a free from Liverpool in the summer.

    Defenders

  • Glen Davies - Age: 20. Apps: 0. Goals: 0. Signed on a free from Burnley in the summer. Has formed a promising early season parntership with Psycho.
  • Denny Ingram - Age: 20. Apps: 81. Goals: 2. Promising right back/wing back who came through the youth system. Has a key role in Houch's 5 at the back system.
  • Graham Lee - Age: 18. Apps: 6. Goals: 0. Broke into the team during last season who should become a real asset to the club (to sell!) in the next few years.
  • Sean McAuley - Age: 24. Apps: 46. Goals: 0. Arrived on a free last season to fill the vacant left back role. Current club captain. Scored a wonder goal against Colchester.
  • Chris McDonald - Age: 21. Apps: 0. Arrived, on trial, in the summer.
  • Ian McGuckin- Age: 23. Apps: 130. Goals: 8. The pivotal point in the centre of defence for a few years. Big, aggressive and downright scary, Psycho is destined to follow old partner Phil Gilchrist onto bigger things.

    Midfielders

  • Jamie Allinson - Age: 18. Apps: 4. Goals: 0. Another product from the youth team who made his debut in the F.A. Cup first round nightmare last season.
  • Chris Beech - Age: 19. Apps: 0. Goals: 0. Signed from Blackpool in the summer.
  • David Clegg - Age: 19. Apps: 0. Goals: 0. Signed from Liverpool in the summer and will replace Paul Conlon who was nicked from us by Sunderland.
  • Mark Cooper - Age: 27. Apps: 0. Goals: 0. Another new arrival in the summer, this time from Exeter City. Should turn out to be a very good signing as Rich was gutted that Exeter had lost their top scorer from last season's campaign.
  • Ian Gallagher - Age: 18. Apps: 1. Goals: 0. Yet another youth team product who had a 'baptism of fire' when he made his debut against Plymouth in the final game of last season.
  • Chris Homer - Age: 19. Apps: 6. Goals: 0. My! The Youth team has been busy (Thank God!)! Looking to be injury free this season.
  • Steve Howard - Age: 20. Apps: 39. Goals: 7. Weighting (ho! ho!) to establish himself this season (Has anybody seen him? Is he injured or what?). Posseses a shot 'like a tracer bullet'.
  • Mick Tait - Age: 39. Apps: 120. Goals: 3. Oldest outfield player in the league. His aggresion, tackling and reading of the game make up for the fact he needs a zimmer frame out on the pitch. Player-coach.

    Forwards

  • Joe Allon - Age: 29. Apps: 134. Goals: 58. Whatever he achieves in his second spell at the club, Joe will always be remembered for his 35 goals in the promotion season. Much loved by the fans - which he reciprocates on the pitch and after the game with his appreciation of the fans' support. A God.
  • Stpehen Halliday - Age: 20. Apps: 78. Goals: 12. Valued at £375 000 by a tribunal in the summer. A fee which Sunderland felt was unfair. Too bloody right. Could become Pools first million pound transfer by the end of the season.
  • Keith Houchen - Age: 36. Apps: 274. Goals: 92. Player/Manager. Since taking on the job his playing form has dipped (he hasn't scored since New Year's Day), partly due to the extra responsibilites and partly through not knowing where to play himself. Is improving as a manager.
