RESULT | 4 - 1 to those rocking Robins |
TEAM |
Weatherstone S, Robinson, Edwards, Powell Beauchamp, Fear, Murphy, Anthrobus Jemson, Russell |
SUBS | Cook (for Anthrobus, 71)
Lilley (for Russell, 71) Arendse, Lewis, Shepheard (not used) |
GOALS | 0-1 CONNOLLY (15) - Close range goal from
a quickly-taken short corner. Too quickly taken for the defence...
0-2 ALLSOPP (47) - Route one. Allsopp was quickest to a long, hopeful ball, and he slammed it past Lundin. 1-2 EDWARDS (71) - Headed home from a Beauchamp cross. 1-3 ALLSOPP (78) - Lundin attempted a left-footed clearance, completely missed the ball, and it was easy for Allsopp. 1-4 FERGUSON (88) - Neat goal after a one-two with Allsopp. The U's had by now given up. |
PERFORMANCE | Ironically, better than against Chesterfield, but still not any good. The U's allowed Wrexham too much space to play. |
MAN OF MATCH | Paul POWELL - Some excellent tackles, especially in the first half. The only defender who looked the part. |
BOOKINGS | Simon WEATHERSTONE (49) - Foul. |
ATTENDANCE | 4,988 - A low attendance led to a morgue-like atmosphere for most of the match. |
REFEREE | Bill Jordan (Tring) - A good game for an official with a reputation for strictness. |

U's crushed by Robins
Christian Edwards' debut goal mattered little as the U's were
hammered 4-1 this afternoon at the
Manor Ground by Wrexham.
The defeat leaves Denis Smith's side in 20th place, just a point
clear of the relegation zone.
Smith gave a debut to the on-loan Christian Edwards, with Steve
Davis and Phil Whelan
suspended, as the U's were looking for a third successive win.
After an early Beauchamp run, Steve Anthrobus fired across goal
but no-one was on hand to
touch the ball in.
Wrexham took the lead after a quarter of an hour when Ferguson's
cross was met by the diving
Karl Connolly at the far post as the U's defence stood around
and watched.
The home side battled to get back into the game, but they were
hit by a second goal two minutes
after the restart when Russell's through ball put Danny Allsopp
through on goal, and the on-loan
Manchester City striker finished well to score on his debut
to put the Robins two up.
Oxford were back in the game twenty minutes from time when Beauchamp's
corner was flicked
on by Jemson and Edwards marked his debut with a goal.
Beauchamp and Jemson put chances wide, and Wrexham keeper Dearden
made some good
saves, but the visitors restored their two goal advantage twelve
minutes from time with a farcical
effort. Edwards cleared the ball straight against Allsopp, and
then Lundin fell over in attempting to
clear, leaving Allsopp an empty net with which to claim his
second and Wrexham's third.
With the home crowd far from happy, the win for the Robins was
sealed two minutes from time
when Darren Ferguson's fine shot with the outside of his boot
beat Lundin to cap a
comprehensive and potentially crucial victory.
