Penalty kings
A brace from the penalty spot by Paul Powell either side of
half time gave Oxford a 2-0 win over
Luton Town in the Auto Windscreens Shield.
Against the run of play the U's grabbed the lead when Joey Beauchamp's
40th minute cross from
the right forced Efetobar Sodje to push Steve Anthrobus in the
box. A penalty was awarded and
Sodje was booked for his pains.
Paul Powell despatched the spot kick to the left of Nathan Abbey
and then repeated the feat eight
minutes later when Luton debutant James Ayres was adjudged to
have handled in the box. He too
went into Mr Warren's book with a yellow card just prior to
watching his side fall 2-0 behind as
Powell doubled the arrears on a night when the U's certainly
left the Hatters mad over having to
pay the penalty for woeful defending.
Oxford now proceed to the Second Round of the competition's
Southern section draw.
