Oxford thwarted in local derby
Swindon secured all three points in a 2-1 win at the County Ground
this afternoon against local rivals Oxford United.
Super sub Guiliano Grazioli scored his first goal of the season with
his first touch of today's game to give Swindon their first home win of
the season in the local derby with bottom of the table Oxford.
Just a matter of minutes after coming on as a substitute towards the
end of the game the striker pounced on a near post cross from Sol Davis
to rattle home the winner after Guy Whittingham looked to have secured
the visitors a point.
Whittingham, making his debut for the Manor Ground outfit on-loan from
Portsmouth, had capitalised on a low cross from Sam Ricketts just after
the hour mark to notch his first goal for the U's after Swindon had lead
at the break.
The visitors had all the possession and the better of the play in the
opening stages of the game and were unlucky not to take the lead.
Jon Richardson saw a close range header cannon off of the post on only
eleven minutes as Oxford dominated but it was to be former Wimbledon defender
Alan Reeves who gave Swindon the lead against the run of play in a tight
faught game.
Matty Hewlett's cross from the right was flicked on by Martin Williams
and Alan Reeves arrived to bundle the ball over the line for the opener.
Whittingham should have notched his debut goal earlier in the second
half when he scooped Derek Lilley's cross over the bar from just six yards
out, but in the end it was to be the Robins' day in the local derby and
Grazioli proved to be the man of the hour. Final score 2-1.
