U's edge it against Silkmen
Oxford progress to the second round of the FA Cup, after defeating
Macclesfield 1-0 at the Moss Rose Ground, courtesy of a Phil Gray strike.
Crowd trouble marred Oxford's battling cup win over Third Division
Macclesfield. Oxford's goal came on the sixty minute mark as Northern Ireland
international striker Phil Gray latched onto a superb through ball from
Matt Murphy and slotted the ball past Lee Martin. It was Gray's first goal
for the club since joining from Burnley and will go somewhere to endearing
him to the U's fans.
In truth that was the only clear opening in the game, before controversy
struck.
Macclesfield were given hope of an equaliser late in the game when
they were awarded an 88th minute penalty following a foul by veteran defender
Andy Linighan on striker Richard Barker.
Furious Oxford fans reacted by charging down the terracing and wrenching
the net away from the crossbar. Police raced to push the fans away but
the game had to be delayed for five minutes while a number of arrests were
made and the net was repaired.
Oxford keeper Richard Knight then rubbed salt into the Macclesfield
wounds by saving Lee Glover's spot kick.
