Dr. B. Gerstman, Professor
Dr. Gerstman received his Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Comparative Pathology from the University of California, Davis and his MPH in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley. He also received a D.V.M. from Cornell University. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Health Science at SJSU. Before coming to San Jose State University, he was a Fellow of the National Institute of Health-U.S. Public Health Service Epidemiology Training Program. He has won numerous awards and is widely published.
Dr. Dan Perales, Associate Professor
Dr. Daniel Perales received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley and his Master and DrPH from the University of Texas School of Public Health. His professional and research interests include injury control and program evaluation. Over the last four years, he has been conducting observational studies of bicycle safety helmet use in two California counties. He has also conducted evaluation of programs related to tobacco prevention, pre-natal care outreach, nutrition education for low-income populations, child immunization, and needle exchange. He has provided strategic planning consultations to the Santa Clara County Senior Care Commission, the Gold Country Tobacco Control Coalition and the California Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. Dr. Perales is a Tenure faculty member in the MPH program at SJSU.
Dr. Vol Ranger, Professor
Vol Ranger received her undergraduate degree in Biology and Psychology at Towson State University. She then pursued a master's degree in Business Administration at the University of Florida. At the University Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, Ranger worked as the Administrator for emergency room services. She also became a part of North Central Florida Regional Trauma Agency as a planner, and was a program manager for Alachua County Fire Rescue. In addition, Ranger was the Medical Department Director at Silicon Valley College.
Dr. Kathleen Roe, Professor
Dr. Roe earned her DrPH and MPH in health education from the University of California, Berkeley. She is Director of the MPH Program and Director of the Community Health Studies Group and is also involved in numerous community-based research and evaluation projects. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and training's and is widely published in the areas of grandparent care giving, participatory research, and community-based evaluation. She is active in national, regional, and local public health associations and reviews manuscripts for several journals.
Dr. William Washington, Department Chair
Dr. Washington has been working in the health field for many years. He has worked in the clinical and non-clinical areas of health. Dr. Washington received his BA in Biology from San Francisco State University, and MPH degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Washington also received a Masters in Public Health Administration and a Doctor of Public Health Administration from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Dr. Washington is currently a professor and Chair for the Department of Health Science at SJSU. He is the Director of the Health Career Opportunity Program (HCOP) and Coordinator of the Masters of Arts Degree Program in Health Science. At SJSU, he has functioned as the Program Coordinator for the University's Mentor Program and Project Director for the Multicultural Community Health Coalition of San Jose, California. His research areas include health promotion/health education, multicultural health issues, and health administration.
