Hi, I'm Scott, a student at Indiana University. Besides being a student, I also write web pages for a living. But with this page, I get to do whatever I want, so it should be a lot of fun! Now, let's talk music...
If you are like me, you always have music on in the car, on your home stereo system, on your PC, etc. I have music on wherever I go, but it's almost never on the radio, because they don't want to play anything that I want to hear. So, I am always on the hunt for unsigned and unknown progressive metal bands. If you aren't quite sure what progressive metal is, just click here and I'll help you try to understand it. Anyway, I think I found a few bands that you should know about:
This site just won it's first 2 internet awards! Thank you!
This page contains many links that will take you off this site, so be sure to so that you can get back!!!
Fireaxe- Not long ago I received a letter from Brian Voth of Fireaxe asking me to check out "Unholy Rapture". He explained to me that he is the only musician and he does the vocals, and that he felt he was taking metal in a new direction. Needless to say, I wasn't sure what to expect.
Unholy Rapture really caught me off guard.
The material isn't progressive, but probably finds it's heaviest
influence in the darker side of 80's metal. It is certainly dark and
brooding but has more to offer than other music in this vein that
I've heard. The lyrics are very intelligent and tend to deal with
questioning religious values and beliefs.
Ever since I first heard this tape, I've tried very hard to think of a band it sounds like...to no avail. Fireaxe has a sound all of their own. Again, they are progressive, and they don't fit nicely into any other genre of metal I can think of. Impressive.
I don't want to leave the impression that Unholy Rapture is the perfect demo, I do want to offer some constructive critism. First, the sound quality is slightly poor (although the music makes up for this). And second, I would like to see Fireaxe pick up another lead vocalist. Brian isn't a bad vocalist, but perhaps someone else could do better, allowing him to concentrate more on the music.
The Fireaxe demo costs $3 (US), and it is well worth having. With a little fine tuning, this sound could help inspire a whole new genre of metal.
Treasure Land- Some of the metal I've been receiving from Europe lately has been scaring me. However, Treasure Land's CD, Questions is quite a refreshing change. It is very melodical, very technical and has some of the best guitar work I've ever heard. In addition, the keyboards are crisp and clear. I would tend to label it "Progressive-Power Metal", although I don't know that any label can do this band justice.
While Treasure Land
has more of a bite to it than bands like Dream Theater and Fates
Warning, it is composed so nicely that it remains beautiful.
Each track has something different to offer that seemingly has not
been done before. In fact, this is the first CD in a long time where
I haven't said to myself "that sounds like...". This is a good thing.
I have been playing this CD for family and friends and it seems
to have a very broad appeal. Given the right break, this band could
flourish in a hurry. I would HIGHLY recommend adding this CD to
your collection, it is fabulous. The CD contains 9 tracks for about
48 minutes of awesome music.
One minor note: the vocals on Questions were performed by Zenny Gram, who is not and never was a member of the band. For when Treasure Land went into the studio, they had no frontman. They asked the lead singer of another band they know to do the vocals for the CD. Zenny agreed to do this and did a wonderful job. However, Treasure Land wants it known that they are currently looking for a new lead singer.
