Expanding Corps Escort Service to West Campus

Current Service:
As a service to Texas A&M students, the Corps Guard Room provides escorts 24 hours a day for students walking on campus. Students dial 845-6789, and a Corps member will meet the person requesting the escort anywhere on campus and walk with them to any on-campus location (resident halls, parking lots, etc.).
The Corps Escort Service has a hard time serving West Campus. UPD provides escorts between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. Sun. through Thurs. in the area of the Wehner building (dial 820-7212), but what about other times?

Student Body President Laurie Nickel would like to see Corps Escort expand to cover West Campus with short response times, but the solution isn't simple. As the SBP website says, "In order to get a cadet to West Campus in a timely manner, however, would require the use of some form of vehicle, be it a car or golf cart. This raises considerable logistical questions and concerns about the safety of having one student driving another around in a golf cart at night."

As the senate found out while trying to implement the Borrow-A-Bike program, legal liability is always a concern.

You can view the status of this project on the Student Body President's website (the page is under construction, please be patient).

The Specksynder Report encourages further research into this idea. We realize that a solution won't be quick or simple, but we will suggest another possibility

A four-wheel bike that seats four might be easier to implement. These recumbent bikes are available with a wide range of options, and who knows, since they are not motorized, maybe there would be fewer liability problems. (More info. on these cars is available at www.rhoadescar.com.)

Again, this isn't a simple matter. Many people will have to study the Corps Escort expansion issue to develope a solution that is safe and effective. We look forward to hearing good progress reports in this area.

However it happens, even if it never happens, it is a great idea, Laurie. Thanks for looking out for the students and trying to make them feel safer on campus.
