Keith's Life at UD
The Basics. . .
UD is located in Dayton, a medium-sized city in southwestern Ohio, between Cincinnati and Columbus. UD is only minutes from the downtown Dayton area. UD is probably best known for its basketball team, the Flyers. However, I could hardly care less about organized sports, so that is all I will say about that. About 6,000 undergrads attend UD, as well as about 2,000 grad students of many different majors. Dayton, Ohio is also the home of Wright State University, Wright-Patterson AFB (where the gov't keeps the aliens), and businesses like Iams, NCR, and Mead. If you are visting Dayton, and you are looking for something to do, I recommend the Air Force Museum,, The New Neon Movies, the Oregon District, and the Dayton Mall. If you need a place to eat, check out The Diner on St. Claire, and you can read the Dayton Voice while you are there.
More about UD and Me. . .
I graduated in 1998.
I honestly enjoyed living and studying at UD. My freshman year I lived with a guy named Rob on the fourth floor of Founder's Hall, a freshman dorm, right in the heart of campus. I had a great time there thanks to the all the great people I met, especially the guys on my floor. This is also when I met Liz, who I dated for two point five years. My second year I lived with a guy named Steve in Marycrest Hall, a dorm open to all students. This was where I worked during my time at UD, in the cafeteria. I could usually be found in the Grill/Pizza area, cooking and/or serving food, although sometimes I got stuck doing dishes in the back. Once in a while I was the cashier. My Junior year, I lived in one of the Garden Apartments owned by the school. I was lucky to get one that was very close to campus, unfortunately, two of my three roommates were psycho (possibly the next Timothy McVeigh). Tom, the third roommate was pretty cool though, but he graduated that December. It was a nice apartment. Last year, I lived in a small house on the far end of campus with four other guys (Tim, Phil, Brian, Andy) in what the administration calls the Student Neighborhood, but what most people call The Ghetto. The Ghetto is an area of about four square blocks of houses which are owned (mostly) by the university and are populated by upperclassmen. The houses tend to be somewhat rundown (thus the name, the Ghetto), but the area is known for its fun and neighborly atmosphere.
I majored in Communication Management, which is the study of communication itself, as opposed to journalism or broadcasting. I also got minors in both Management and Psychology, although I found Management to be the more interesting of the two. I've had three teachers who, in my mind stand above the rest. Those are Fr. Putka (Political Science), Prof. Macklin (English, and a bit of an a**hole), and Dr. Dehler (Management). I also had especially good teachers in the departments of History and Philosophy. I have made the Dean's List several times.
I was active in several groups on campus, (see info. page). I was and still am very active in UD Habitat for Humanity, which is discussed elsewhere. I am also invovled with Flyer Radio, UD's campus radio station. Typically, I spend two or three hours a week in the studio as a DJ, playing rock music, and going on the air between the songs. I like when people call in with requests, but it doesn't happen very often. I am also a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. This group has several hundred members at UD who represent some of the top students in the country. However, it is not a very active group, so it was not really part of my daily life.
Now that I have earned my undergraduate degree, >I am working towards a Master's in communication. I was offered an teaching asssistantship, which pays for my tuition. In exchange, I am teaching two sections of CMM101. I am looking forward to my second year. I am living off-campus with my former housemate, Brian, and I'm working on getting a new band.
