Disney's portrayal of Pegasus in their movie "Hercules" was inaccurate. Pegasus was neither a gift to Hercules nor was he ever ridden by the famous Greek hero. Their closest association was in the battle against the Amazons where Bellerophon and Hercules fought together against the woman tribe.

Pegasus/Pegasos's name comes from the Phoenician "pag sus", and means literally, bridled horse.

The ki-rin is the Japanese pegasus. It lives in Paradise and according to Japanese legend only visits the earth at the birth of a Sesin, or wise philosopher.
