CURRICULUM

Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD)

 Computer Assisted Drafting Course Narrative:

The focus of Computer Assisted Drafting is to teach the student how to use the computer to draft technical drawings for use in engineering, architecture, graphic design, and art.  This course is part of the pre-engineering strand of the Upper Darby High School Tech Prep program and is designed to teach students the features, applications, limitations, and considerations associated with micro-computer drafting & design programs.

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

·         Demonstrate skills in the efficient operation of the AutoCAD and/or MicroStation J design software packages.

·         Operate the CAD software to complete an orthographic, floor plan, architectural, and large format drawing.

·         Operate CAD related components including the microcomputer, DOS operating system, Microsoft Windows, keyboards, mouse, printer, and plotter.

·         Apply CAD to specific drafting disciplines such as artistic design, electronics, facilities planning, architectural drafting, mechanical design, etc. by designing and completing drawings using the system.

·        Discuss innovations and trends in CAD technology including recent developments in hardware, 3D applications, and digital transfer to automated machines.

Drafting & Design - Key Assessments:

 1.  Produce computer assisted drawings with quality and content appropriate for use in commercial design, manufacturing, or construction.

2.  Use all available capabilities of the program software selectively to complete and enhance drawings, both those assigned, and those selected by the individual.

3.  Modify and correct drawings, using the Edit commands available in the system.

4.  Provide dimensions, notes, bills of materials, and other text on drawings as necessary to satisfy the information requirements of manufacturing or construction.

5.  Use drawing libraries composed of standard shapes and components, or previously prepared drawings, to insert desired information and entities into current drawings.

6.  Portfolio of student work.

7.  Final examination
