About the University

General Information

The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) offers students a unique opportunity for academic excellence and individual growth. The University is committed to a rigourous, comprehensive approach to higher learning.

IIUM regards knowledge as a trust from Allah to be utilised, in accordance with Hisguidance, for the benefit of human life. Thus, the University honours intellectualenquiry, considering the quest for knowledge to be an act of worship. By integratingsources of revealed knowledge with an arts and sciences curriculum the Universitycontributes both to the enrichment of the intellectual tradition and the advancement ofthe individual and society.

The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) was founded in 1983 by the Government of Malaysia and co-sponsored initially by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and some Muslim countries. The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, directed in 1982 the Ministry of Education to plan for the establishment of the International Islamic University in Malaysia and a coordinating committee under the Ministry of Education was formed to actualize the project by May 1983. The University was established under the Malaysian (Company Act) so as to allow the university to use English as the medium of instruction. This is due to the fact that Malaysian law does not allow a public university to use the medium of instruction other than Bahasa Malaysia. Close links have been established between IIUM and such national and international institutions as the League of Islamic Universities, the International Association of Universities, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Affiliations with local businesses have enabled IIUM students to gain practical work experience in the application of their chosen disciplines in industry, in addition to their normal campus-based course work.

The first group of 153 students graduated from IIUM in 1987, and the University takes pride in the fact that its graduates have made a significant impact in Malaysia, as well as in many other countries. They have demonstrated excellence not only in the public and private sectors, but also in universities throughout the world where they have completed higher studies.

Students
There are approximately 9,107 undergraduate and 1,547 postgraduate students, including 1,456 international students from more than 90 countries around the world, reflecting the geographic and cultural diversity of the ummah. IIUM students are highly motivated and academically talented, many mastering two or more languages. Many also pursue double degrees, for example in Human Sciences and Revealed Knowledge, Laws and Shari'ah, etc.

About the University:
Profile

IIUM Logo
The Logo represents the aspirations, ideals and objectives of the International Islamic University Malaysia.
It is made up of four main parts:

1-the symbol of the Al-Qur'an;

2-the symbol of the Kaabah;

3-the eight domes pointing in eight directions; and

4-the eight outer domes.

THE SYMBOL OF THE QUR'AN
This represents the highest source of knowledge, namely the Revelation (Wahyu) of Allah s.w.t. which guides and inspires the pursuit of knowledge in the University.

The central position of the symbol implies that the University upholds the supremacy of Allah's knowledge, wisdom and words above all human knowledge.

THE SYMBOL OF THE KAABAH
The symbol represents:
the unity of knowledge and the unity of mankind which Islam propagates; the principle of Tawhid (the oneness of God) as the foundation of Muslim personality, culture and society that the University strives to promote through the dissemination of Tawhid-based knowledge and disciplines; and the concept of 'Ibadah (service and worship of Allah) as a fundamental rationale of human existence and all pursuits of knowledge in conformity with Allah's guidance and Shari'ah.

THE EIGHT DOMES POINTING IN EIGHT DIRECTIONS
They represent the different branches of human knowledge and academic disciplines in the University which spring from the same source of Tawhid and the basis of Revelation.

In terms of specialization they point in different directions, but the various academic principles are in fact united by the principle of 'Ibadah and subservience to the 'Aqidah (belief), Shari'ah (law) and Akhlaq (ethics) of Islam.

This common principle is represented by the colour of gold sprouting from the square symbol of the Kaabah.

THE EIGHT OUTER DOMES
The domes represent the various Islamic development efforts of man based on the knowledge and disciplines which are grounded in the common foundation of Tawhid. The development of social life, culture and civilization must therefore be inspired by Divine guidance and true knowledge.

Brief History: Malaysia

The host of IIUM, Malaysia, has rightly been called "the land of eternal summer." Situated in Southeast Asia, just north of the equator, Malaysia is eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

The country is composed of two regions: Peninsular Malaysia, at the southernmost tip of Mainland Asia, and the states of Sarawak and Sabah on the island of Borneo. To the south of Malaysia are Singapore and Indonesia, to the north Thailand, and to the east the Philippines.

Served by more than 23 international airlines, Malaysia's capital is approximately a 45 minute flight from Singapore, two and a half hours from Bangkok, and six hours from Tokyo.

Malaysia is sunny, warm, and humid throughout the year, so clothing should be light. Temperatures range from 21 to 32 degrees Celsius; annual rainfall is from 200 cm to 250 cm. Although it can rain at any time, rainfall usually occurs in the afternoons. The wet season is usually from October to February.

A diversity of ethnic and religious communities make up Malaysia's twenty million people. The largest group is the Malays, who profess Islam and are considered the main indigenous community. Other major communities include the Chinese, the Indians, the Orang Asli (the aborigines); and many different tribal groups, especially in Sabah and Sarawak.

Malaysia's official religion is Islam, with freedom of worship guaranteed by the Federal Constitution. In addition to Islam, the main religions are Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Taoism, and there are mosques, temples and churches throughout the country.

Major festivals include Eid ul-Fitr, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, and Christmas. Numerous other festivals are celebrated throughout the year.

The official language of Malaysia is Bahasa Melayu. English, Tamil, and various Chinese dialects, are also widely spoken throughout the country.

Various places of interest are easily accessible from the International Islamic University campuses, including the numerous landmarks, monuments, museums, parks and gardens, tourist centres, and mosques of Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam. During vacation periods, student may wish to sample Malaysia's multitude of beaches, tropical rain forests, highland areas, and historic sites, or stay with local families.
