Alpha/Head Start Male Initiative Program

The ALPHA PHI ALPHA/HEAD START, MALE INITIATIVE Program, is a collective agreement between the following:

Dept. Health & Human Services, Region IV;
Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Region IV Head Start Programs

The MALE INITIATIVE PROGRAM
goal is to increase the Participation of Fathers and other Significant Males (grandfathers, male friends,uncles,etc.) in Head Start Programs and in the Development and Guidance of their child or children. As well as helping the father or significant male rebound from Social forces which may have weakened both their ability to function self-sufficiently and their capacity for aspiring to some desired goal in life. In addition the program endorses the use of programs which will intervene in the lives of the Fathers and Significant male, to help remedy these problems.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
is committed to revitalizing the African-American male and family through its efforts in the Head Start Program. This collaborative effort;
  1. assists fathers to rebound from the social forces, which may have weakened their ability to function self-sufficiently, or their capacity for aspiring to some desired goal in life.
  2. seeks to foster initiatives which intervene in the lives of Black fathers to remedy the negative social forces which tend to detract from success; thereby, enhancing the ability of African-American families to remain strong and overcome the negative social effects.
  3. focuses on developing effective strategies for increasing the resiliency of African-American men through intervention and prevention programs;
  4. Sponsors forums to alleviate some of the stereotypical views held on African-American men.
  5. Providing mentoring, counseling services to facilitate grassroots communication and coordination between family planning, Head Start programs and issues relating to male involvement.
