Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Evening “Sand Control Challenges in Offshore Sabah - Malaysia” by Mr Karim Shaikh Date: 5th October 2004 Venue: BSRC, Kuala Belait ABSTRACT Unconsolidated
formations add considerably to the challenge of trying to exploit reserves
economically from highly compartmentalised, stratified reservoir units in
the South Furious Field, Offshore Sabah. Although downhole sand control has
been implemented since field start-up in the early 1980s, complex field geology,
low reserves per well and offshore unmanned operations philosophy adopted in
North Sabah has meant that search for the optimum sand control methodology
continues to this day. Key
for future viable field development projects such as South Furious
Central South will be the selection of well concepts that balance well cost with
well productivity and completion reliability, make use of previous
experience in the field and exploit the latest technological developments in an
effort to reduce unit development costs. This presentation will summarise Shell Malaysia’s
approach to achieve low unit cost developments in a sand prone environment and
will cover the following;
