SPE Brunei has started the 1998 with their dinner and lecture function on 16th February. The function was sponsored by Sedco Forex Schlumberger. The function was held at the Nories Function Room, SKBB Plaza in Kuala Belait. This was the fifth in the series of such function and the second time held in Kuala Belait. It started at 7.15 p.m. A brief introductory speech was delivered by the SPE Brunei Section Vice Chairman II, Hj. Zainal Abidin Bin Hj. Md. Ali.

For the benefit of the new members, Hj Zainal Abidin reiterated the mission of SPE which is to capture and disseminate knowledge/technology to its members. With this in mind, SPE Brunei has been active in pursuing this mission and has lined up a few more SPE evenings/workshop like this in 1998 :-

  1. Maximising Recovery From Mature Fields
  2. Integrating Seismic, Geological and Engineering Data in reservoir Charaterisation
  3. Cost Effective/Practical Reservoir Management (workshop)
  4. Insurance in Oil Industry

He also mentioned that SPE Brunei Section has introduced its homepage in the internet via WWW.SPE.ORG. Information on the society’s activities can be browsed through.

Hj Zainal Abidin then introduced Dr. Shlyapoberst who is the expert in hydraulic fracturing. Dr. Shlyapoberst has more tha 20 years experience in fracture and rock mechanic application. He introduced Fracpacking to Shell and is currently a staff reserch engineer in Shell E & P Tech. Co. in Houston.

Dr. Shlyapoberst then shared his experience and knowledge with the professionals who attended the function via his presentation on "Hydraulic Fracturing For Effieient Completion In Unconsolidated Formation". His talk raised many interesting questions and discussions.

Hj. Zainal Abidin was thankful to the supports given by the members, sponsors, the organising committee and SPE International for the successful evening. It was attended by more than 40 participants from various sectors in the oil and gas industries in Brunei.

As a reminder to all members, the next function will be held on 9 March, 1998 in Sheraton Utama Hotel, Bandar Seri Begawan. Dr. S. Allahwala will be presenting the topic "Maximising Recovery From Mature Fields".
