THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

LUKE

Introduction: Luke it the longest of the Gospels. The introductions in the books of Luke and Acts link the two volumes together. Both of them are addressed to Theophilus, whose name means "lovers of God." The introduction in the book of Acts refers to the "former account" as being concerned with that which "Jesus bagan to do and to teach."

The identification of Luke as the author is primarily based on the "we" passages in Acts (beginning in Acts 16.10), which indicate that Luke was associated with Paul in his ministry and wrote down the accoung of his activities (see also the Introduction and Outline to the book of Acts). Luke is specifically mentioned by Paul in Colossians4.14 and Philemon24, when Paul was imprisoned in Rome (see also 2Tim 4.11).

Very likely Luke was a converted Gentile from Antioch in Syria, who joined Paul at Troas on his second missionary journey. The language and structure of Luke and Acts reflect a man of high literary ability, excellent education, and a Greek background and perspective. The physician's viewpoint evident in Luke8.43 confirms Luke as "the beloved physician" of Colossians4.14.

During Paul's imprisonment at various places, not only did Luke devote his time to preaching and the pastoral ministry, but he presumably also studiously investigated the life of Christ. A probable date for the writing of this Gospel is about A.D. 60.

Luke states the nature and purpose os his Gospel (1.3). Although there were other works about Christ, Luke wanted to give an "orderly account" as a historian who well informed and capable of offering a literary document and reflecting a reliable account as he secured it from eyewitnesses. In comparison with other Gospels, Luke presents all the major facts of Christ's life; thus the book of Luke has been recognized as the most complete representative accoung of the life of Jesus. His order is not necessarily chronological, but in his writing he follows a definite plan and purpose.

Luke is noted for his interest in various classes of people. Many women are identified and have come to be known only through his account. Children likewise receive more attention from Luke than from the other Gospel writes. The poor and oppressed are given frequent consideration, aspecially in the parables.

Jesus is portrayed by Luka sa an actual Person in history Who "came to seek and to save that which was lost" (19.10). This is illustrated throughout his Gospel by the ministry of Jesua as He healed people and befriended sinners and the oppressed. It was also apparent in many of His parables.
