Dear Mr. Desautels: Regarding your questions: - if ISO has developed a specific set of standards for schools or education systems; No, the ISO Technical Committee responsible for the ISO 9000 standards (ISO/TC 176) has not developed such a document, nor has any other ISO Committee. However, at least two countries have related standards or initiatives which may be of interest. Standards Australia has published AS/NZS 3905.5:1995, Guide to quality systems standard for education and training. In the US, the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award and their "Eduction Pilot" may also be of interest. For more information on these initiatives, please contact: Standards Australia 1 The Crescent, Homebush NSW 2140 Australia Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Education Pilot Program National Institute of Standards and Technology Administration Building, Room A537 Gaithersburg, MD 20899-0001

- if not, which of the existing (ISO 9000?) sets are applicable:

As a start: ISO 9000-1:1994 (selection and use of the standards), ISO 9004-2:1994 (quality management guidelines for services), ISO 9001 (model for quality assurance - the "registration" document) and, for reference, ISO 8402:1994 (Vocabulary). All of these are available from CSA at Tel: 416 747 4044.

- the identity of schools certified ISO 9000, if it exists;

A number of educational institutions in North America are ISO 9001 certified (in Canada, we say "registered"). Directories of registered companies can be obtained from the Registrars (eg, QMI). I have a commercially available directory that provides such examples as St. Lawrence College (Kingston, ON) and the Commission Scolaire du Centre-de-la-Mauricie (Shawinigan, QC)

- if there is a connection between ISO and UNESCO or International Baccalaureate organization (IBO);

You should contact ISO (Geneva) directly regarding a formal connection between the UN and ISO. At a working level, certain UN groups (eg, UN Environment Program) have a liaison with some ISO Technical Committees. At this time, ISO/TC 176 has no UN liaisons nor do have any liaison with IBO. I hope that this information is of assistance.

Yours truly, Kevin McKinley Secretary, ISO/TC 176
