This level is a wide open space with hills and tall pyramids in the center and two platforms at each end. Some of the gems bounce when they first fall down at the beginning of the level so either back track once you get a few gems, or try to wait a few second so you can see where they all land. Wastelands can be a real pain if you don't know a few simple rules.

First of all, there are three Wakkas. They will continue to respawn quickly after they are destroyed, so hit and run.
Secondly the auto turret can be your best friend if you know how to use it properly. It can't be used with the Light rig, only the Heavy or Middle rig. When activated, your turret will point in the direction of the nearest enemy even if there is no clear shot to them, like if they are behind a barrier. To shoot forward when the auto turret is activated hold the while shooting.
Watch your shields! There is a shield restore in this level behind the platform with the exit block on it. Make sure you can get to it if you are getting bombarded with enemy fire. Nothing will tick you off more than having all but one of the gems and being destroyed on your way to the last one.

If you follow all of these rules you should be able to get all of the gems with no trouble and keep your shields fairly high. A good player will be able to get all of the gems and hang out by the shield restore while continually picking off the Wakkas for a high score.

Tricks

There are no tricks in this level unless you count picking off the Wakkas while restoring your shields over and over a trick. The Playstation will keep track of your high scores if you remember to save after you are done playing, so you might want to do this.
